Popular baby names you're bored off...

Tess dd1 has a "special" name and was one of 2 in preschool/infants and I was genuinely delighted. I am always tickled when I hear her called "" and then her last initial. We chose it because we thought it was pretty more than anything else. Her younger sister will prob be one of several in her class.

Iam debating this with dh at the moment. We are expecting dd1 in February and I love the name Isla but I am put off calling my dd it as it is now so popular and in the top 5 names. Not just that, I constantly hear it as I am a teacher but also in toddler groups and at the playground when I am with ds1.

If popularity doesn't bother you fine. I grew up with a dull popular name and didn't want that for my dds. And not picking from the top 10 doesn't mean choosing a bonkers name like moonunit or princess. There are hundreds of perfectly lovely decent names that are under used. Swap lily Amelia Isabel eve tedium for Mary, Natasha, Zoe or Tess for example.

Oh god, dd2 12 weeks is Amelia, always loved the name, dd2 is Rhiannon but gets called Rhianna

My dd was named after her 100yo Great Grandmother and her name has been repeatedly slated on this thread

I love my very classic but very popular children's names - they mean something to our family and I couldn't care less if someone else considers them unimaginative. I will just feel sorry for the kid who has the very imaginative/witty/unusual name thought up by his/her very with it parents!

So odd to keep seeing my own name cropping up here! It was neither popular nor regarded as 'gorgeous' when I was born, in the mid-seventies. I knew/ know no-one of my generation with the same name and always hankered after something more contemporary.I like my name now ...though feel it has been sullied by over-use!
So many people have remarked in the last, say, 10 years on my 'lovely' name- when few people thought it was lovely in the past (except, presumably, my parents). It's so true that our tastes are informed by trends.

one of my dcs names is one here, named after someone. dry special to DH and I. if dc turns put like the person we named them after then there won't be anything common about my dc or boring! And as for popular and overheard, dc is the ONLY one in the school with that name.

don't think that being given and unusual name is a gift, often people don't get it rig (30+ years of experience in this) it is quite often a bit of a curse!

No, I am not lacking imagination and was not following a trend when I named DD- I just adore her name. There's some really horrid comments on this thread.

Yes, there are loads of them in DC's year but DH and I are clear on the reasons we chose the name and don't have any regrets.

And, as it happens, the name fits DC's personality perfectly.

If it weren't a family name I probably wouldn't have chosen it (other DC has a less common name), but .

I also happen to know a child with a name that is really not-at-all common, and yet there are three of them in our (not-big) school.

At least those of us who use popular names, are fully prepared for the fact our children might be one of several in a school.

However, parents who choose "special" names for their precious offspring, are never quite prepared for that moment when someone else has had the same idea as them.

I know a mother who named her daughter Anya - this was eight years ago - and when her daughter started school at the age of 4, the mother was horrified (and I mean genuinely horrified) to discover not only were there two other girls named Anya in the school, there was one other Anya in the new reception intake (60 pupils).

I know sisters called Ellie (shortened/nickname) and Isabel, their DM chose the names when she was a young teen it just so happens they were popular when she had her DC. She's neither unimaginative or 'just following trends'.
I think this thread is a bit gloaty and cruel.

I wouldn't say I'm bored of them, but working in a school means that there are some names where the children are always known by their first name and surname/initial.

I'm glad mine don't have to be called by their first and surname.

Popular boys names here are Joshua, Alfie and Dylan.

Girls names are Lily, Megan and Ellie.

I do prefer all the popular names to Ralph and Milan though

Sorry thurlow. I just hate the snobbery on some if these threads. If you like a name use it. If you don't want a popular name, avoid those in the top 20 or 30 most popular list ( and if you want an unusual one, go hang around London ).

What is wrong with saying a name is unimaginative?

If a friend said they were calling their child I would be very surprised. What does mark them down me? Is there some sort of point system.

I don't dislike any of these names except Olivia and Oliver but they are everywhere.
