Use Riley or Joshua as a middle name and find a name you both like for first name. You shouldn't have to accept a name that you don't really like. (I agree with most pp that Joshua is much better than Riley - it would have been on our shortlist but we didn't want such a popular name.)

VeraGrant · 18/09/2014 22:54

I don't think there's any problem with two 'ee' sounds at the end of the names. Two of my children and many sibling pairs I know share that name ending (eg Lily and Charlie, Henry and Rosie) and it's perfectly fine!

I personally think Harry, Toby, Max, Oscar and Jacob go really nicely with Charlie

Louisejames31 · 18/09/2014 22:28

Thanks I'll tell him that :-)

I'd say you are the one giving birth so he needs to accommodate your preferences, not the other way round! If it has to be one though I'd say Joshua. Don't go with Riley, it's awful.

ShadowStar · 18/09/2014 22:22

I prefer Joshua to Riley.

usualsuspect333 · 18/09/2014 22:22

I like Riley.

It's not a very MN name though.

justcallmethefixer · 18/09/2014 22:19

Joshua, that way they don't have the same sounding end to their names.
It will help to avoid confusion in later years as they only start listening half way through what you're saying!

Ariana08 · 18/09/2014 22:13

I don't like either but Riley sounds better than Joshua

mum9876 · 18/09/2014 22:11

Prefer Joshua.

Louisejames31 · 18/09/2014 22:08

Aww thanks for your reply I'm not due until January so we've got ages. He keeps calling the baby riley all the time which I thought was quite a cute name at first but I've really gone off it now and the amount of people that hate it puts me off even more. I'm trying to think of loads of names in the hope he will agree on one and not be dead set on that, now he's come up with Joshua as his second favourite which is ok but I don't love. Thanks again :-)

I would avoid anything with an eee sound at the end as it doesn't really flow with Charlie IMO. Joshua is very popular here, as is Riley, although of the two I do prefer Riley as the couple I know well are adorable boys and the Joshua's are more wild in nature. But that's the ones I know Smile

I struggled with boys names, ended up giving DH the top 100 list and told him to pick 3 he liked. I did the same. Luckily we did have one that matched, but it was with only a few weeks to go before the baby arrived. You do need to agree I think. Try some names out loud when you're talking about the baby 'Riley keeps kicking today' or 'Joshua's got a real wriggle on' etc. You will find the right name, good luck.

Louisejames31 · 18/09/2014 21:53

Haha thanks your putting me off the name even more maybe I show this thread to my other half he's having none of it. I love the names Oliver, joseph, Alfie, leo and William but he doesn't like any of them and can't have William

Agree about Riley being terrible. Especially next to Charlie.

Louisejames31 · 18/09/2014 21:43

Some really good names sophronia a lot I've already suggested to my partner the only names I'm not keen on out of the list are Jacob, milo and Asher thank you :-)

mymummademelistentoshitmusic · 18/09/2014 21:41

Riley is awful. Really awful. Joshua is fine.

Louisejames31 · 18/09/2014 21:38

Haha I really like Joseph with joe or joey for short but my partner hates it. It's such a nightmare when you don't like any of the same names. He really wants riley but I like more traditional names, the only one he has come up with his Joshua. It's so hard I could think of so many girl names easily. I like Thomas but that's my brothers name.

Sophronia · 18/09/2014 21:35

I don't really like either, but Joshua is the better of the two.

How about:

Aaron
Asher

Isaac
Jacob
Jude
Lucas
Leo
Louis
Micah
Max
Milo
Matthew
Noah
Oliver
Owen
Oscar
Rowan
Reuben
Samuel
Theo
Thomas
Zach

Zachary

AChickenNamedDirk · 18/09/2014 21:35

Leo or Rufus

Louisejames31 · 18/09/2014 21:33

I love the name William but we already have a William in the family. I like James it's my sons middle name. Toby's cute and I quite like Nathan

OP posts:
Gemerama82 · 18/09/2014 21:31

I like Rory, Joseph, Nate and Kit

HollyBen · 18/09/2014 21:30

I had Riley on my list for DC1. DH said no(turned out to be DD)

Joshua is the naughty boy at DDs nursery. He has a thing for biting and has been a right royal pain in the butt at all parties we have been at. That really puts me off it.

thatsn0tmyname · 18/09/2014 21:29

I'm not too fussed about either but would choose Joshua of the two. Daniel, Thomas and Patrick would be my suggestions

Gemerama82 · 18/09/2014 21:29

I agree Riley is awful. Joshua is over used.

ScrambledEggAndToast · 18/09/2014 21:28

Riley is terrible. Josh is a bit meh. What about James, Toby, Jamie or Nathan. These are some of my favourite boys names. My DS name may even be one of those but I'm not telling!!
