nicknames for Alexander

are there any other than Al, Alex, Xander, Sandy, Lex..?

Are there many Alis/Allys out there for example?

I love the name, but he'd almost inevitably be Alex, which I don't dislike, but its one of those nicknames that doesn't do justice to the full name!

I know an Alexander who only goes by Addy! Well into his teens now and nobody bats an eyelid.

My 13 yo Alexander mainly gets called Alex but also Al, Ally, Lex, Lexi. DPs dad is an Alexander and he gets called Sandy all the time.

You can't really win- he may settle for something not thought of. We chose a name that can't be shortened and he has a nickname unrelated because he likes it!

I know two Sandys, two Zanders an Alexie and an Axel ( because he called himself Axel-gander when he was little).
I also know a couple of Alexs, but all the Alexanders I know have very firm nns by which they are ALWAYS called i.e none of them is generally referred to as Alexander.

My ds2 (3 years) very much dislikes Alex. Evrrybody calls him something differant. He goes my Alexander, Xander, Xandie, Xand, Sandy, Ali, Al, but his favourite is Panda.

DS (1.5yrs) is Alexander nn Alex. Tried other 'cooler' nn's, like xander, sandy etc, but just sound pretentious. Sticking with Alex/big Al for now! Smile

I've only ever heard Alex being used tbh. The others are quite unusual names.

Our son is Alec, the Scottish diminutive of Alexander though we named him Alec on birth cert.

I would assume Ali / Ally was short for Alastair. Love Sandy though, not sure where you are in the uk but this is a fairly common short version of Alexander in Scotland.

I love the name Alexander, but I have a brother called Alex (just Alex), so if I used it I would use Ally as a nn (I think Ali looks feminine unless paired with a Muslim name). If you call him Ally all the time he might get mistaken for an Alistair, but I personally don't like any of the other nns.

I like Sacha, but it's never seemed like a natural nn to me.

Anders is a completely different name imo.

And Ally sounds very feminine to my ears, perhaps because I know quite a few Alisons known as Aly/Ally.

I probably wouldn't choose Alexander if you don't like Alex.

I have an Alexander and I felt like you about Alex as a nn. Thing is as his mother you can choose to use his full name all his life. You can't choose his nn. He will adopt what he likes as he gets older.

I tried using Lex and Xander but I felt false. I tend to call him Alex, Baby or Alexander.

Despite worrying it is too popular I feel better about it as a name than my eldest's name, he has a less common name.

I have an 11yo Ally.

He really dislikes Alex and has been an Ally since he was small. We chose the spelling (rather than Ali) from watching Ally McCoist on Question of Sport Blush

Most Alexanders and Alexandras do tend to end up as Alex. It's just the most natural shortening imo.
