Ok, I think I may have the name.....Mabel...

I am unashamedly starting another baby name thread Wink promise this is the last one (today anyway)

Another poster suggested Mabel to me, it's a name I LOVE but had discounted because a few years ago had a dog we called Mabel. However said dog only lived a couple of months and very few people were even aware what we had called the dog.

Is this a deal breaker? I'm starting to think not so much! Why oh why did I use a name I love on an animal knowing that we were ttc?

Apart from the above, do you like the name? Do you think it goes with big brother Eli?

I worked with a woman in the eighties called Mabel. She was probably early fifties, had really short black hair and was quite glamorous, and I loved her name.
I also have a friend whose mum is Maybelle which I always want to say with an American southern drawl. (She is posh and from central Scotland!)

Love Mabel almost as much as Maude... If I was pregnant, if I was having twins and if they were both girls these would be their names!

What about Amabel - the original (and Scottish) version?
From the Latin, meaning 'lovable'.

Re earlier poster's comment, the phrase 'Mabel, what's on the table' (not under) came from amazingly popular and now rather cringe-worthy radio programme 'Have a Go' featuring professional northerner Wilfred Pickles and his wife, Mabel, who gave out prizes from the said table. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wilfred_Pickles

Oh I absolutely LOVE the name Mabel. I had a baby 3 weeks ago and really wanted that name but hubby hated it so I wasn't allowed!! We went with Beatrice instead!!

When I was growing up Mabel was one of the really, really dull granny/ auntie names.

I had an auntie Mabel and she loathed her name beyond description.

Can't help but think of Auntie Mabel from Come Outside ... goes off wondering why she went everywhere in a spotty plane, "come on Pippin, lets get the plane out we need some milk" Confused

Our three year old is Mabel. We thought we'd shorten it to May, but she's always Mabes if anything. We love it and are struggling to find another girl's name we like as much!

I have a beautiful cat called Mabel and wanted to call our child Mabel if a girl, but wasn't allowed as the cat is still very much alive
It does sound awful at first but is a real grower

I really really really dislike it. Sorry. Three of my friends have all called their daughters Mabel and it actually makes me cringe to hear it. To me, it's an ugly, unfeminine name with no redeeming features. I'm usually quite 'each to their own' about names, but this is the one name that grates horribly on me.

I'm in the south and I have only ever heard it pronounced as may- bull too.

It's a pretty name but being a Northener I always hear it pronounced as May-bull which takes the shine off it a little! Of course if you're a posh Southener then you won't have that issue Wink

I love it, but probably only because I played Mabel in Mack and Mabel, and totally loved the character. If you'd asked me before then I'd probably have said it was awful, but I guess that shows how much the person makes the name.
