Velvet for a baby name?

Hello, I am really loving the name Velvet for a girl. It has lots of lovely connotations for me from childhood being an avid fan of National and International Velvet and The Velveteen Rabbit.

I also love the Pixies song Velouria.

Am I missing something really obvious that will forever condemn future daughter to a life of cringe?

It does fall firmly into the 'choose a word, any word at all and it can be a name' category but I still quite like it.

I know a Velvet who's about 18 months now. Apart from an initial thought of "that's a bit unusual" I didn't think much of it, apart from it's quite cool. Also unusual without being really out-there (it's an often used word, after all). The only thing odd for me is that her older brother has a very classic, Thomas-the-Tank style name so the two don't really 'match' Grin

To me it doesn't sound like a name and I couldn't imagine shouting it across a park to my child without feeling embarrassed or without having a fluffy dog come up to me instead

When I was a kid I was going to name my first born child Fuchsia Velvet. I still love it. Firstborn was a boy and so were the next two. I'd forgotten all about the name by the time I got my dd.

But, there is a processed cheese in US called Velveeta cheese. So I'd make sure your surname isn't something like it. Or Curtain.

It's not my choice but if you like it OP then why not?

Tipping the velvet-a Victorian euphemism for vulva. I personally would avoid.

I like it and suggested it to DH when I was pregnant with DD but he was totally against it.

DH also vetoed my middle name choice of Foxglove, which was met with derision when I mentioned it on here before, so maybe he had a point.

I'm sure I read a magazine with someone who had a baby called Velvet in when I was pregnant. DD is 7 now though and I don't know who it was.

But it really does conjure up toilet roll or stripper connotations as a first name

My friend's grown up dd is called Callico, Cally for short. Lovely name I think. I like velvet as a middle name.

of course it's a proper name! I love it for the same reasons you do, but was shot down from using it by the "tipping the velvet" connotations which I hadn't known about.

It's lovely. I would use it but I know for a fact Dh would hate it but as we aren't having anymore it doesn't matter. Grin I really do think it's a beautiful name.

At first I thought Noooo! But the further down the thread I read, and the more I consider it as an actual name, the more I am liking it! I don't think DH will go for it for next DC though. Think I need to start my own thread!

It's a stripper name. Seriously, lots of burlesque strippers call themselves velvet. Plus, tipping the velvet is olde slang for oral sex. Plus, it's not a name and sounds daft.
