Alexyia Mai??

Thanks for any input I'm really struggling. Middle name has to be Mai :-)

Alexyia reminded me of Dyslexia... Which I feel would be strong enough to be a torment for such an unusually spelt name...

It's alright. Though as others have said, not keen on the y.

And as Witty has said, Alexia is the name of a medical condition.

But then so is Amelia and that hasn't put anybody off it.

It was on our shortlist (Alexia), but I found out it was the name of a brain disorder.

I missed your post about your grandmother. That makes things different, if you want to use her name as she said it, as a (very nice) way to remember her.

OP I think the different spelling is just a matter of translation /transliteration.
So far as I know, the Russian (Cyrillic) script version of Alexia AND of Alexiya (or Aleksiya) is the same.

However, the 'usual' version in English is with an x and without the 'y'. See, for <a class="break-all" href="//example,www.behindthename.com/name/alexis" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">example,www.behindthename.com/name/alexis

The usual pronouciation for Mai in English is My and for May is May. There is also Mae=May.

Of course, no-one has to be 'usual', but, as other posters have said, an unusual spelling does sometimes involve a bit of explanation and/or confusion.
But absolutely, your baby, your choice. Good luck.

Yes my Granmother (She was Irish if that makes any difference) pronounced her name Mai as May. It's a family tradition to have Mai as a second name as all first female children and grandchildren have it- she was an amazing woman ;-) and my godmother as well.

I think I agree about Alexia, my husband is pushing for the in his words 'funkier' spelling of Alexiya... ;-)

Alexia is a nice name. Alexyia looks dreadful. As does Alexiya as it seems even you can't spell it Wink. Unless you have the appropriate foreign surname to go with it, I would avoid it.

I don't like the Alexiya spelling, Alexia is much better. Did you grandmother really spell May as Mai? I only like that if it's pronounced 'My'.

Well you asked for opinions, so I'd say it's a no vote from me, especially with the complicated spelling and the hyphenated Mai. I know you said it has to be Mai but I personally think May looks a lot better.

Alexia on it's own without the superfluous y is not too bad, could nn lexi.

I like the name but agree that it should be Alexia or, at a push, Alexya. Not the i and the y.

Looks like the OP was a typo. (OP wants alexiya not alexyia.

Not keen on the Y. Pointless, but it's your child! I do love Alexa though.

Of course. Do you no know that letters must be rationed :). Hence why southern pronunciations such as "baarth" and "marster" are all wrong...

Please don't let people put you off because she will have to spell it out to everyone for the rest of her life.

I have a very normal name with a rare spelling and I love it, teachers and interviewers remembered me and it really isn't that often that I have to keep spelling it out to people.

If you love the name use it!

If you say it's a name, I'm sure you're correct. But people will spell it incorrectly her whole life. Even if you spell it Alexia, people will probably call her Alexa accidentally so I would just keep it simple with Alexa. You could use the longer version as a nickname if you wanted.

Mai is pronounce May, it was my grandmothers name. Alexiya is a name I promise :-) Its a version of Alexia which we really liked but the spelling of it reminded us of where we met and married.

Loving the comment about it being a waste of a Y ;-)
