If we really love Oscar but worry about it being too popular...

The Oscar Pistorious case may put some people off, but if they meet my Oscar, he'll put them right!
I have always loved the name, having been a fan of Oscar Wilde since my teens Our son is an Oscar, and we could not in a million years think of a better name for him ,He is the most wonderful son anyone could wish for - sensitive,generous, intelligent,witty and wise beyond his years - it's a great name to give to a boy!

Great name: everyone can spell and pronounce it, including grandparents and young cousins.

Our DS' name problem was similar: it had to work in Spanish and English.

I have met three Oscars in my entire life, age 23, early 30s and mid-40s (them, not me!). No babies/small Oscars where I am (Spain).

Oscar is lovely. And it looks like O's car when you're magic marking all their fucking cars Grin

I think it is okay...very popular. I think people are using it as an alternative to Oliver because that is currently so overused.

I thought that peak Oscar popularity had passed a while back. It's the only boy's name my partner and I can agree on. We're in N. London and I've never actually met any small Oscars, only teenage ones.

Hopefully the Oscar Pistorious case may put some people off!

Oscar is a lovely name. It used to be very popular in north London but I don't hear it so much any more.

We were going to call this little one Oscar but it's just too popular for me - there were two in dd's nursery of around 20 children and they are 3 years old, rather than born last year when it reached 7th place rising from 17th, plus I hear tons at play groups etc. I guess it's regional but it seems very popular here. It is a fab name though.

What about Lorenzo/Enzo?

Thank you thank you thank you! Somehow lost track of this on the new mobile app and my incompetence.

Oscar still right up there as a favourite and I am feeling marginally reassured that we should just go for it anyway if nothing else jumps out.

Thanks for all the suggestions. Frustratingly, most of my favourites from your lists are either names in the family already or ones that my dh has vetoed like Max, Rocco and Nico.

I do absolutely love the Raphael/Rafaello/Rafaele/Rafe name but each country has a very distinct way of spelling it and I think that would cause confusion.

I think it's a good choice for your cultural crossover. I think that Oscar peaked at least 13 years ago. I only know two and they're both young teenagers.

I have 2 sons aged 7 and 5 and have only met one Oscar in the two schools we have attended. On the other hand, there are 2 Sebastians in my son's class alone. Go with what you like!

I always loved the name Oscar as a big fan of the Peter Carey book. However its popularity really put me off and we called our son something else. I have met lots of Oscars at baby groups etc so glad I made the decision although still sad that everyone had the same idea as me!

If you really love it, go for it. It's relatively popular as it came from nowhere but it's not everywhere IMO. Nice name too!

True, we could just go ahead and use it but seem to have got ourselves in to a knot about it!
Love some of the name suggestions but can't use some for familiy reasons. I love Rafael, Nico, Leo and Luca but they are all out.
