What do you think of the name Toby?
Not as a nickname for anything, as a full name.
What sort of impression do you get from it?

I know several English Toby's age 12. Just an ordinary name to me, like Harry or jack.

I have an almost 2 year old Toby. He, and his name, are lovely. I do know an adult Toby too, and it good fine on him.

Never have to spell it, or repeat it to anyone. Also, have not been asked if it is a nickname for anything (it's not).

It's a lovely name. It would've been DS's name, split second decision when he was born made us choose another name!

It's not a dog's name FFS. Would anyone in their right mind look at a baby named Toby and think hmmmmm dog. Hmm

Aaah no :( It was the only name we could agree on, and now all I can think is 'dog'.

I also think it is a dogs name. The first thing that comes to mind when I hear the name is my Gran's miniture poodle. There is even a Toby Dog in Abney and Teal so other children will associate it with a dog too.

I love it. If we'd had a boy last time around he would have been Toby. I think it works man and boy.

I would never consider the 'pet's name' thing. Lots of people give their animals human names; there are some very well known cats called Tom but no-one ever says Tom is a pet's name.

I used to love it, but now I think it's a bit too cute sounding for an adult.

Toby was also my best friend's dog's name growing up.

I like it. I have a family member with that name and probably because of that I seem to hear the name all over the place! I would say in my experience it's becoming more popular but not too much. Go for it!

Absolutely lovely name, but then I am biased (DB's name). If it wasn't DB's name, it would definitely be on the list for a future (hypothetical) DC. I know a couple of other Toby's, one 17 and one nearly 2. Older one is Tobias, but 2yo and DB are both just Toby. My grandmother told my mum it was a dogs name, but that was before he was born, and afaik, there haven't been any negative comments since. He finds it rather annoying that there's never anything with his name on (mugs, pens etc), since I and our other brothers all have top-20 names.

It's not awful, but it sounds like a pet's name. But DS also has a friend called Toby and he is American and super-cool!
