What do you think of the name Toby?
Not as a nickname for anything, as a full name.
What sort of impression do you get from it?

I have one so love it. DH wouldn't consider Tobias so went for Toby. He's the only one in the school and haven't met another, noone has ever mentioned a pet connection.

Ds2 is Toby. He is now 7 suits him perfectly. There are three more Toby's across his large primary school of various ages. We know two adult Toby's too. It's a great name. No need to spell it. Not too out there or too common. Great in a baby, child then adult. Never met a dog called Toby but wouldn't care as according to this thread my ds1 also has a dog name.

It's a great name. I would have used it for ds too if best friend hadn't used it. Never met a dog called Toby... Ever. Dogs have almost every human name going nowadays so there will always be one dog with your name choice! I also know a few adult Toby's and none are babyish!

I have a Toby (or more often Tobes or Tobly, because that's what happens to names, especially when you're a baby). Not Tobias because I honestly couldn't see myself ever using it. He's definitley a Toby/Tobes and not a Tobias. I did consider Tobias for the birth certificate but it just didn't fit right, somehow. Not regreted the decision.

I have a Toby, I still love it. Not a Tobias even though he does get called that!

I have however been told many times it's a dog's name but I don't let that bother me. If he was called Rex they may have a point.

I like it, a lot.

Unfortunately for me, my mum does actually have a dog called Toby. It is no more a dogs name than Max,Milly,Poppy, Rosie (all names I have come across when walking my dogs).

For me, I can't use it because it would feel as though I was naming the child after my mums dog and great as he is, he isn't that great.

But seriously, it is a nice name, if you both like it then use it.

OP people have just told me my favourite boy's name is bound to be pronounced either bidet or beady (and a load of other unflattering opinions). I'm still using it.

Sometimes the negative reactions help you to make your mind up.

I'd have never thought dogs name, expected it to be short for anything or raised an eyebrow when you introduced me to him.

Please ignore me too OP and use the name. The pet thing wouldn't bother me a jot. I love Rex and as we all know many, many people love to screech 'but it's a DOG'S name'.

Dogs are ace anyway.

First Toby I ever met was at uni. He was lovely - blonde and very handsome.

So, I say go for it.

Well I don't mind the name, but I did have a cat called Toby.

I have no issue using human names stolen by animals though.

As long as it's not Shep, Fido, Mr Paws etc.

It's a great name. There's a sprinkling of them through all age groups, so not a new name, but not common either.

Prefer it short for Tobias.

I know a lot of dogs. I don't know any called Toby.

Thanks, feel a bit better about it now.
DH hates Tobias, and our surname begins with S - so it all runs into one sound.

Well if I'm asked for an honest opinion about a hypothetical name, rather than a named child, then Max is a dog's name (to me) and Oliver is quite clearly a cat's name (in my little head).

It's the nature of the board.

One of my DC has a first name that get's completely slaughtered here every second Tuesday. I try not to read those posts if I'm feeling touchy but most days I know it is all just opinion and hot air.

I don't understand the whole 'dog's name' thing. Maybe if you were considering Lassie or Rin Tin Tin... Do a search for the top 10 most popular dog names and you will find they are names like Alfie, Charlie, Max and Oscar. But if someone asks about naming their DS one of these, no-one says 'dog name'. Our dog was called Ben, our cats were Arthur, Claude and Pedro. No-one would say these were 'dog/cat names'.
