What's wrong with this name? I think it's pretty and unusual without being too wacky but, looking at the stats, it's virtually unheard of, what am I missing?

Also how would you pronounce it?

OP If you like the sound of 'Isola' (pronounced EE-soh-lah) you might perhaps also like to consider 'Gisela', (GEE-sehl-lah) which sounds rather similar. It's the German version of 'Giselle' - and, while not unknown in the UK, very uncommon.

BikeRunSki - Yes but Isola in Italian actually means Island whereas some of the other examples are just names of islands so completely different...

I don't really see it as a problem though as, if the OP lives in the uk then Isola doesn't mean island...I only mentioned it as I speak Italian so that was my first thought. I get what you're saying re: Isla as that's island in another language.

Its the name of the mysterious island in the Virtual Villagers game series. But its quite pretty.

Isola was indeed Oscar Wilde's sister's name, but it was a short form of the ancient Celtic 'Iseult' , not the Italian word for island. (Another form of the name is 'Isolda', yet others are 'Yseult', 'Isolt', 'Essyllt' etc ). See:

Isla is the name of a Scottish river (and glen) that has been used as a girl's name in recent years. The Gaelic word for island is 'Eilean' (say: Ell-lan), not Isla. And it's masculine.

Ailsa Criag is an island, but the name Ailsa does not mean 'island'. It is probably a Viking name, containing the element 'elf' - see: www.britishbabynames.com/blog/2013/03/ailsa.html

Ailsa has also sometimes been used as a short form of Elizabeth.

Banana: I like it by the way and for all you know it alls who think just because a name is different that its been made made up, go an climb back under the rock you've been hiding under or realise where now in the year 2014.
That name was Oscar wilde's sister name so fact it is a name check baby names sites before you start preaching

Doesn't seem to be a problem for all the Islas and Ailsas out there, not to mention the Ionas, Skyes and Lewises and Arrans.

I love it. However, whilst it may not be popular as a stand alone name, Isabel and Isla and very popular, so there will be lots of izzy's etc.

It's not unheard of for nouns to be used as names. And lots of names don't translate well into other languages. Or translate into something else! Can't think of any examples but i'm sure there are lots!

I don't love this name; it makes me think the baby would be all alone.....isolated..... Sad

Isola Jones is a famous (and gorgeous!) opera singer. Love that name and am trying to convince DH to not veto it!

Ee-sol-ah. It's the Italian for island. So, as I said, not actually a name at all.

I like Peninsula for a girl. And Moraine for a boy................

Well, it not being a name would be a bit of a clue. And how on earth can you think itMs "pretty" when you're asking how to pronounce it?
