James or Jimi

We were thinking Jimi as it goes will with ds1s name and works in the language of the country we live in. However I worry that for his official name back in UK Jimi will be too 'light'. Should we officially call him James (which does not work in the other language, and will make it an odd fit with ds1) and call him Jimi as nickname, or stick with Jimi? Poor little ds2 is 4 days and still nameless :-/

James everytime on his birth certificate you can call him any nickname you want but he needs a solid name for when he is a grown man.

I'd go for James on the birth certificate but let everyone know he's to be known as Jimi. Other people don't agree though and say if you're going to call your child something, just call them it! Not a disaster either way I would say (although the spelling Jimi will be mispelt in the UK).

Definitely James on his birth certificate and then Jimi as a day to day name. James is a great name FWIW.

How much time is he likely to spend in the UK, and how much in the other country? If he is likely to grow up there, possibly stay there as an adult and only go back to UK to visit relatives, then Jimi makes sense. If it is only for a couple of years, then go with James.

If James doesn't make sense in the country he's going to grow up in well then it doesn't make much sense to me to use it. It seems oddly Anglocentric to think he needs a name that will suit the UK even if he's unlikely to live here.

Where do you live if you don't mind me asking?

James on BC and Jimi as nickname . It's a perfect name but I'm a bit biased .

James, definitely. Jim, Jimmie, jimmy, are a bit no go names since operation yew tree I'd say but James is lovely, a classic name

If he's likely to live in the uk then definitely James.

if not then whichever works best in the home country
