How to pronounce Saoirse?

I've been given a class list for my new class in September, and this name is on it. I know it's Irish, and I've been told 2 variants of pronunciation.
"Sir-shur" or "See-ur-shur"?

Or something else? Obviously I want to get it right!

Oh, and my friend is Scottish.

ShovettyMcShovetty · 28/07/2014 12:21

badtime the Saoirse I knew was from Leinster and she pronounced it Sor-sha. Maybe she was unusual but that's how she pronounced it. (Giving myself away a bit but I am from NI too btw - not English).

Kveta · 28/07/2014 10:23

in Glasgow, the ones I met were always Sor-sha - like Niall is often pronounced nee-yall there, and I was shocked to find it's nye-all everywhere else :o

badtime · 28/07/2014 10:22

I've only ever heard 'sor-sha' as an English mis pronunciation of 'Sorcha'.

badtime · 28/07/2014 10:20

I'm from NI and say 'seer-sha'. I just asked my friend from Mayo and he says 'sare-sha'.

hollyisalovelyname · 28/07/2014 09:54

ShovettyMcShovetty · 28/07/2014 08:24

I have only ever heard it pronounced Sor-sha, but it looks like there are a few pronunciations!

MultipleMama · 28/07/2014 00:13

This is my friend's name and we pronounce it Ser (sir)-sha x

squoosh · 27/07/2014 18:33

I say seer-sha but some Saoirses pronounce it sare-sha.

twinjocks · 27/07/2014 17:51

Seer-sha

MrsJoeDolan · 27/07/2014 13:36

OP ask the parents how they pronounce it, or little Saoirse herself! There are some accent variations based on region. But really it should never be
Sor-sha
Surrika
Shor-sha

MrsJoeDolan · 27/07/2014 13:33

Seer-Sha

Never Sorcha or Shor-Sha.

Lally112 · 27/07/2014 13:09

Shock Looks like I'm clueless having read the thread.

scottishmummy · 27/07/2014 13:05

Seer-sha nice name

ColdCottage · 27/07/2014 13:05

When I looked at it I read it as 'sa row c" looking at it closer that might not be how I would say it but that was my first reaction to it.

cate16 · 27/07/2014 13:05

I'd stop thinking about it and just ask. Who can tell these days :-) and in my experience the more you over think it- the more difficult it will become in September.

Hoppinggreen · 27/07/2014 13:02

My Dd is playing it right now with her friend ser -sha!
Her mum says it more like sair-sha though and she is Irish

SchroSawMargeryDaw · 27/07/2014 12:59

I would say "Sor-sha", is that wrong then? Ask them maybe?

fourforksache · 27/07/2014 12:57

I've heard both sor-sha. or sir-sha.
