What do you think? I am rather liking it, fits the Biblical trend but not popular yet, easy to spell, short.

Only problem is will people pronounce it Job as in 'Job interview' or how it should be said Jobe? I noticed more people spelled it Jobe recently but I hate the e, it looks wrong.

I think a lot of people will pronounce it as in "job interview". I think you'd need to change the spelling (i.e. Joab / Jobe) to avoid people pronouncing it wrong.

And I agree with the pp's who are put off the name because of all the troubles suffered by the biblical Job.

I like Job. Also like Joab.

I've never heard the term 'job' used for poo in London.

Checking the poo thing it seems to be pronounced like Job ie Job seeker, Job centre etc not like Job which is pronounced Jobe ie Joe with a b on the end and we live well down south so that should help.

I don't like Jude and if Job is a poor meaning, being named after the patron saint of lost causes would surely be worse! though thanks for all the suggestions and glad for a couple of positive comments, I was beginning to think there was near universal hatred for Job.

I know it's pronounced differently, but written down its the same. And easy for kids to spell.

That would be the word job though wouldn't it? The name is pronounced differently hence trying to make it work with a different spelling.

In Yorks and Lancs it would be known as slang for poo. Also I know people from around the country that are familiar with it. I definitely wouldn't.

The problem with Joab which is nice, is it loses the meaning, it is a different person. Job is a good role model, I like that.

Ayub/Ayyub keeps the meaning but I don't like the sound.

The shit connection is the only thing putting me off but when used in this way is it pronounced Jobby or Joeby, if the former I'm not so bothered.
Though I imagine the nicknames could be bad blow job, odd job hmmm but then he can always be 'Joe' if he prefers

I'd maybe go Joab.

Job = jobbie, which is slang for shit round our way.

He'd be called odd job or something worse...

My DD1 did her thesis at uni (Theology degree) on the use of the book of Job in post holocaust writings. It was one of the most harrowing and emotive things i have read in a long time and the minute i hear the name Job i now think of all the suffering and persecution of the jews. For that reason alone i don't like it as a name for a small innocent child.

Sorry IMO it's unfair to name your kid Job. Poor kid! Would you want to be called that?! I reckon at least 50% of people will get it wrong. Cruel.

Not too keen on the alternatives. I do like Jonas/Jonah though he had a rather miserable time too and is not such a good role model as Job.

Definitely not Joel, Jude or Jon though could warm up to Joel maybe. Absolute nos to Josiah or Jedidiah, don't like the fussier Biblical names. I like the shortness of Job.

I like the story of Job, I am not religious but it is a good message, life is suffering but keep the faith/stay true to yourself and did many Biblical prophets have a wonderful life, I can't say living through a flood that kills everyone else isn't exactly one of my greatest dreams but there are plenty of Noah's and having a father willing to kill you is hardly a dream come true but there are a fair number of Isaac's around

Hadn't even heard the poo reference before, perhaps that is why the Jobe spelling is more popular though Joby is even more popular

Hmm overall I still like it.
