Iona Joanne- any thoughts?

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone can share their opinions to give DH and I some food for thought please?

DC1 is due in Nov, we have chosen not to find out whether it is a boy or a girl. One of the few girls names we can agree on as an option is Iona. I am Scottish and my Grandfather spent a lot of time on Iona and Mull as a child so Iona is close to the heart as well as loving the name.

But we want to use Joanne as a middle name after our Mums, Anne and Joan. We can't decide if Iona Joanne works or if it is too o and a heavy. What do you think?

Thanks!

I'm not convinced they work together.

gallicgirl · 17/07/2014 19:25

They kind of sound like the same name.

Iona is lovely but I think maybe bedt with a single syllable name.

Bowlersarm · 17/07/2014 19:26

I love Iona. I don't think it's great with Joanne though.

Gingerjv · 17/07/2014 19:27

To my mind it sounds nice. Iona is a lovely name

Bowlersarm · 17/07/2014 19:28

Although it is amazing the two entire different names make up another proper name. Very clever.

NormHonal · 17/07/2014 19:28

I think they look/sound the same too, sorry.

Fiddle, that is what I think too, they just don't work too well together but I was hoping it was just me and I could be persuaded otherwise... Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

We don't even really like Joanne that much anyway, but it is the only combination we can come too out of Joan and Anne and it is important to us that the middle name relates to both Mums some how.

Back to the drawing board I guess Hmm. I love Iona!

Iona Jane, using letters from both your Mums names instead? It flows slightly better.

Bowlersarm · 17/07/2014 19:32

Oh good suggestion Hatty

barmybunting · 17/07/2014 19:35

Oo, Iona Jane is much better! Thanks Hatty, will discuss that with DH.

The other option is some combination of Anne and Caroline for the middle name (MIL is Caroline but called Joan as that is her middle name.) Any ideas on that?

Will your dd be known as full name or is Joanne going to be her middle name?
I think personally if middle name then fine as she will be know as Iona. (Fab name) Smile

weatherall · 17/07/2014 19:36

I know a child Iona.

It's nice and not as common as Isla.

HattyMonkey · 17/07/2014 19:37

Meant to say I love Iona it was on my short list for dd2.

barmybunting · 17/07/2014 19:39

Good question funnyface, I should have clarified that Smile. Joanne would just be the middle name, she would be known as Iona day to day. We have a rather long surname as it is so just first name day to day is definitely the way to go.

We love Isla too but it is too popular for my liking, despite thinking Isla Joanne sounds better.

Could you use both as middle names-

Iona Caroline Anne

EverythingCounts · 17/07/2014 19:41

Iona Carolann? It's ok but think Jane would sound nicer.

HesterShaw · 17/07/2014 19:42

Iona is beautiful, but not with Joanne. Too many "n"s.

Actually there aren't many little Joanne's around any more. I think it's kind of pretty.

barmybunting · 17/07/2014 19:43

We considered that Bowler but the plan is to use my very short maiden name as a second middle for a boy or a girl, which I really want to do so that is why we are trying to see what we can do as a combination of the two names.

Saying that, I really like Iona Caroline Anne.

HattyMonkey · 17/07/2014 19:43

Bowlers that sounds nice.

Bowlersarm · 17/07/2014 19:45

Iona is such a lovely name I think we are all trying to make it work for the OP Smile

HattyMonkey · 17/07/2014 19:47

I agree, we are all rooting for a little Iona Grin

barmybunting · 17/07/2014 19:47

We do love it, hence desperately trying to make it fit Grin. I maybe need to let go of the maiden name thing, I don't want to though really Smile. She can just have 5 names!

Our other main contenders are Anna Caroline or Lillian Joanne.

HattyMonkey · 17/07/2014 19:48

Would your maiden name work as a first middle then Joanne?

barmybunting · 17/07/2014 19:50

Sadly not Hatty, it is a very simple one syllable name but is also a word so sounds odd anywhere but second middle.
