... I just have at this birth announcement for a girl named:

Harlea-Rae.

I don't dislike it because of the hyphen (I just wanted to get that out there), but more for the mis-spelling of Harley. Which is a name I don't like anyway. And then it's hyphenated with Rae - nothing wrong with that, but it just doesn't sit well as Harlea-Rae, IMVHO. It's twee and ... just nah.

I had to share as there's no way I'm saying anything IRL.

Overheard on the postnatal ward, after having dd2, someone had named their newborn, innocent boy...Blade.
It made me sad. Why would you do that? He is surely going to have to live up to that name or be hideously bullied. What if this child has a really gentle nature or is a bookish geek?
I think there should be someone if stopping people from giving awful names. The registrar should be able to veto if the name chosen is horrific.

I used to know a Marvellous & thought it was a fab naming concept... Until I met his sister Fortunate. I could never get over the thought that he was marvellous but their parents just felt fortunate to have her. Part of me wishes I'd married someone from a different culture so we'd have more variety to choose from for our DC without having people Hmm at us!

Fortunate & Marvellous seemed like completely normal names when I worked in an inner city nursery & met children called things like Kaejae - I thought she was known by her initials until I saw it written down. Tbh, most of those families had bigger things going on for them than incorrect spelling though!

usual this thread may be highly classist but, apart from Kacper and Fortunate I know of very similar names among the majority White British population of my home town.

braelynn sounds like something a flammable nighty was made of in the 1970s

Harley would be in the wide ball park area of 'ok' if it wasn't spelt like a dairlea triangle and hyphenated.

reminds me of 'billy-rae was a preacher's son and...."

Why do people feel the need to give their child such horrid names :(

There is a difference between variant spellings such as Katherine or Catherine but to just throw letters together to make it sound like a name is beyond me, looks like you sneezed whilst playing scrable and that's the name baby got...

DD goes to school (secondary) with a girl called Saint Claire. There's a suburb where we live called St Claire. This is NZ

I know a little girl called Stevie-Leigh and a boy called Bruxton-Chase.

The latter always sounds like an address to me "I live at 4 Bruxton Chase"

I know a family where there are 4 children. All have names beginning with K including Kryztal (crystal) and Kaiyne (kane)

I like unusual names, my name is not common for my age and I like the "identity" it gives me in that if anyone's calling it it tends to be me iyswim. I never had to be know by my first name and the first letter of my surname. It's the quirky spellings that drive me mad - they're saddling the poor child with a lifetime of having their name incorrectly spelt Confused

Mind you, I suppose misspelt names can be the norm for Clares and Katherines too........

Can we please talk about Barcley? I just want someone to acknowledge that it's spelt wrong. Looks like it's pronounced to rhyme with parsley.

Sadly (and I realise this has been done to death) People do and will judge someone for their name. They shouldn't, but they do. A teacher is going to look at that name in 5 years time and immediately think little Harlea - Rae needs to sit at the front of the class.

But heh, it could be said I like boring, classic, nice names.
