Mother giving me grief over baby name!

I must start by stating that my dm is absolutely AMAZING in every way and I trust her opinion on everything Smile

Which is probably why I'm finding it so annoying that she doesn't like my choice of Kitty if I have a girl. (She likes all my boy choices btw).

She says she is surprised that I am going with something so plain after all the other lovely choices I have suggested over the three years of ttc with fertility problems. (The problem is that all of those lovely names just don't feel right). She says it is a nothing name, though she said this about my ds name but adores it now. She thinks it is an old ones name and nothing special.

I think that it is quirky and old fashioned but not batshit crazy which is what I am going for. Dh loves it as do I. Oh and btw the issue is nothing to do with putting something longer on the birth cert! Grin

I don't really know what I'm asking, I think I just want to vent!

As pp have said, never give people a chance to express an opinion on your choices
(however, I'm going to Grin)
I like Kitty, it doesn't fail the high court judge test imo
my first association was the Anne Frank one, but that's ok
ds has just said he knows a 17yo who has this as a nn for Katherine.

Andcake · 12/07/2014 21:09

Your major mistake here is sharing names before dc is born- it's just asking for trouble. People love babies and knowing the name when it is attached to a baby is a different kettle of fish.
Now you have done it you either have to take on board her opinion or ignore her.
Kitty is nice but if you have a dd you will always know your mum doesn't like her gc name. If you hadn't shared you would never have known this. I like Florence too btw but they are both on a level to me.
I would stop discussing names with anyone but your DP ( be vague from now on - we will know when see baby etc) then announce when baby is here.

colleysmill · 12/07/2014 21:09

This reminds me of a story my dm used to tell me about when I was born (late 70s) - apparently my grandma was aghast when they named me because it was an old ladies name and I'd be forever teased.

Well noone ever has teased me about my name and my grandma grew to love it. It's more common now although not top ten but I am quite happy with my name.

ThrowAChickenInTheAir · 12/07/2014 20:58

Her opinion is irrelevant. It's your baby.

Always a good idea not to discuss names before the baby arrives. Talking about names before you can see the 'owner' makes it abstract and hard to attribute to a real person.

Mil kept calling ds by his middle name for ages and kept 'forgetting'. I ignored it.

callipygian00 · 12/07/2014 20:43

Kitty is gorgeous. Your Mum may associate it with older people now but from the moment she meets her gorgeous grandaughter she will only be able to associate it with her. I'd give you the same advice my sister gave me when organising our wedding - you'll never please everyone so just go ahead and do what pleases you and your partner.

wigglesrock · 11/07/2014 19:49

I love the name Kitty, it floated about my lists for a while (I have 3 daughters), strangely my Mum never liked it either. She thought it was a very old fashioned/dated name.

I didn't use it because It was pipped to the post each time by a different favourite, your mum will get used to it & if she doesn't - tough, she's had her shot at naming babies.

Bohemond · 11/07/2014 09:50

I'm afraid for me Kitty doesn't pass the High Court Judge test.
As a nickname is nice.

blueberryboybait · 11/07/2014 09:38

DD2 was going to be Kitty but with Katya on the birth certificate.

KERALA1 · 11/07/2014 09:27

You are not being unusual picking turn of the century names sorry. Play groups full of Florence's, Beatrice's, Amelia, kitty it's not quirky or original it's what our generation gravitate towards. I got a shock when I realised how run of the mill my supposedly out there names were!

RelocatorRelocator · 09/07/2014 10:31

Well quite donttrythisathome

I'd just stop discussing it. If she asks again, say you need to meet your baby before making a final decision. At the end of the day this is not your mum's decision to make, it's yours and your dh's. She doesn't have to like the name!

donttrythisathome · 09/07/2014 10:20

She's not that amazing if she is being so rude and controlling. Just something to think about...

crazylady321 · 09/07/2014 10:15

Its not my cup of tea, but I know how hard it is when you really like a name and people comment about it. When I was having my eldest I had a couple of names I had my heart set on but due to alot of critism I went with something a bit more plainer and although I do like it I do regret not calling her something a bit more quirky

girliefriend · 09/07/2014 09:36

My dm didn't like my choice of girls name which I had liked before I was even pregnant, because of this I went with something else and tbh have always regretted not sticking to my first choice.

Kitty is lovely, but then I like any of the Bennet sister names (Lizzie, Jane, Kitty, Lydia, Mary) Wink

There are a lot of Florences about and it's even more old fashioned than Kitty surely?!

P

SquidTableau · 08/07/2014 16:09

I told people, when I was pregnant, that my DC was going to be called Euphemia or Mungo (no offence to any Mungo or Euphemia reading ofc Grin) - that way when they heard the real name they were mostly relieved!

PestoSurfissimos · 08/07/2014 15:48

Kitty is lovely

Just take no notice Grin

KERALA1 · 08/07/2014 15:43

If you trust her opinion on other stuff listen to her. I was going to call my dd some real horrors before coming to my senses at 37 weeks. Not sure I agree with ignoring what others think. It's not you that has to live with the name and if your dm has your best interests at heart and is generally sensible and hates it....would give me pause for thought anyway

Yorkshirelassreturns · 08/07/2014 15:18

I think it depends on your relationship with your mum. My mum hated my favourite names and it totally put me off it- in hindsight she was completely right as it is a fad name and I actually don't like the sound of it anymore! I think kitty is a cutesy nn but I would definitely choose a longer name to give her more options. It's not a 40 year olds name...

drLu · 08/07/2014 14:51

Kitty is gorgeous!! I don't tell anyone the name options (other than you lot!!!) family get far too involved.

imip · 08/07/2014 13:42

It's yours and dh's choice, not your dms. She has has our turn. Don't compromise name choice, it matters nought what others think!

I may be slightly biased of course as kitty is a family name, my grandmother and two aunts on both sides. I personally don't see the point of a long form name on the birth cert. I dislike the name Catherine, but that's my personal choice. It may not be yours.

Btw, I also have a kitty Smile. She is 2.5 and sitting across from me, chatting, and drawing pictures. I see the name suiting her as a young lady as well! Good luck!

curiousgeorgie · 08/07/2014 13:36

I loved a certain name and everyone hated it... (Especially my mum!) and I wavered on choosing it...

I'm so glad I stuck to my guns. She suits it completely and everyone else has got over it.

I think Kitty is lovely by the way Smile

gymboywalton · 08/07/2014 13:33

i agree with your mum
it's awful

it' just makes me think of hello kitty

KERALA1 · 08/07/2014 13:31

Totally agree with tread. They are only curly haired toddlers for a few years. I toyed with some names for dd1 that I now cringe about and am so glad I didn't use. She is already a thoughtful careful bookish 8 year old and one of those cutsie names would have been totally wrong for her.
