How would you pronounce Mateo?

Just that really, how would you pronounce it and what do you think as a name? Would be a brother for Luca if we decide to go with it.

Ma (short vowel like apple) - tay - oh

It's lovely. I know a Mateosz (sp?) (Mat - ay-osh) - polish and a French/ Brazilian Mathias (pronounced Matt-ee-ass)

Thanks for all the responses think we may finally have a name for dc4!!!( if it's a boy which I have a strong feeling it is) I really like tayo as a nickname too. Thinking of a name for this one has been so hard as we've already used everything that we like!!
Hmm now we just need to come up with a possible girls name too Grin

Mat-ay-o here too. Tayo is a nice nickname that I've heard used here (Australia) - obvs not spelt like that! Grin

I'd put the second T in and everything will be fine. Easily acknowledged as what it is.

With one T I had to do a little mate eee oh. Then realised it was obvious.
I know a Luca. His brother is Alessio. Also obvious but different Grin

Oh and it's Matt-ay-oh. I'm surprised anyone would mispronounce as it's a fairly well known name.

combust I have no problems pronouncing it thank you and as the vast majority of people on this thread have shown it's certainly not unpronounceable. I just wanted to see if he would encounter any different pronunciations if we decide on this name.

Wouldn't occur to me to say it any other way. Great with Luca.

I don't think it's an unpronounceable name to be lumbered with at all.

Mat ay oh. I know one called teo (Tay oh) for short, I always thought that it was nice.

Op if you are having trouble pronouncing it then so are the many tens of thousands of people that your son will encounter in his lifetime. Do you really want to handicap your child with such an unpronouncable name?

Please ignore my imagined pronounciation pregnant, my friend's husband is Romanian and her son's name is Matei, so very different to Mateo, but you can see why my first thought is to just sub the 'eye' for 'oh'
