Sorrel - name for a little girl? Your thoughts

What do you think to Sorrel as a little girls name?

My family are all set on her being called Ruby but I just feel that isn't 100% right.

So she could be Sorrel Ruby T(our surname begins with a T)
Sorrel Bea T
Ruby Sorrel T
Bea Sorrel T

How could Sorrel be shorten?

I also like the following names:

Coco
Sage
Wren
Willow
Elmer
Winnie (grandmas name)

Your thoughts would be welcomed

I love it! Couldn't see DH going for it though....

I don't think it goes with Ruby as a middle name though, too many R's in a row although sadly Ruby Sorrel does work better!

I love Sorrel -- I've wanted to use it ever since I read Noel Streatfeild's Curtain Up as a child. But DH wasn't keen, so the DDs went un-Sorreled.

There are loads of little Rubies around.

I know a Sorrel. She's about 13. Sister called Poppy. I think it's lovely.

Ruby has been done to death ( at least around here - blame Franz Ferdinand and that song)

Sage - makes me think of Sly Stallone's son who died very young.

How about Saffron if you like plant based names?

I much prefer Sorrel to Ruby (which is very popular - I know about six!). Its also, IMO, classier than Ruby.

The other names:

Coco - as a nickname or a 'proper name'? Reminds me of Coco Pops.
Sage - Not keen
Wren - A bit 'out there'
Willow - Sarah Palin has a Willow ...
Elmer - the elephant?
Winnie - Nice, but a bit dated

Hate sorrel.

Like ruby, willow and don't mind bea as a shortened version of Beatrice but not bea on it's own

What about Saffron? Similar kind of name. Saffron Ruby works well.

You have great taste in names.

I like Sorrel and Bea. I also like Wren.

How about Juniper, Iris, Briar, Pearl, Coral, Blossom, Jojo, Piper, Indigo.

Just read Florascotia's post- I knew there was a colour association with Sorrel. That would put me off Sorrel Ruby as I wouldn't put two colour names together.

I have loved Sorrel ever since I read Curtain Up by Noel Streatfield when I was young. I say go for it, way nicer than Ruby!

If your surname is only 1 syllable then Sorrel Ruby T would be better, but if it's any more than that then I'd go for Sorrel Bea T.

Sorrel Bea sounds the best to my taste. Sorrel is a very beautiful name!

I like Sorrel and while (with ref to the plant) it does mean sour it can also mean 'reddish or russet brown'. The flowers and seeds of the sorrel plant are a pretty russet colour.

Since the Middle Ages reddish-brown (chestnut) horses have been called 'sorrel' horses.

Sorrel, Bea and Sage are lovely names. Not at all keen on the others.

Sorrel Bea T works well.

I like nature type name and Sorrel is very pretty.

Ruby is awful in my opinion.

There was a Sorrel in my year at school. The only thing we thought of it at the time was to list her name along with those of a handful of other girls who had other unusual one-off type names but not in a nasty way. Pretty sure she didn't have a nickname or shortened version. I've never heard of another since. It's a plant name. I think nicer than Ruby but only in the sense that Ruby is quite widespread now although nice itself.

I know a Sorrel who is 50+, very nice well to do lady with lots of dc's she's very close to and clearly adores.
Positive images of the name for me.

Thank you for all of your suggestions. I agree that Ruby Sorrel has lots of 'r' sounds in it. I like Sorrel Bea which also has the Ruby link (Ruby is a family name hence my family thinking she will be called that)

It's good to know that *most of you like the name choices - any other suggestions?

And - yes - I think you are right why would it need to be shorten!

It sounds lovely.

But it means Sour. I wouldn't want to call my kid Sour, what if she was a right mardy arse Grin
