Keir?

I really like the way this name sounds but I am not sure what image it conjours up. I am going for strong and classic like Keir Hardie and Keir Starmer but does it sound more like a recently coined name like Kai and Kayden?

Also, does it matter that it sounds like Kir Royale and is the same name as the private company who collect the bins where I live? Am hoping that latter is boring enough that people won't have noticed, but am not sure!

Honest opinions welcomed - will an uphill battle to persuade dh anyway so is definitely not settled. An alternative we both like is James but that might be a bit boring.

It would be to go with a long and complicated surname and a sister Anna.

But even in an English accent it's just 'keeer' isn't it? I don't think people would hear 'Kia'.

I may be wrong of course.

It's a good strong name, classic but not common. The bin thing could put me off, though!

I really like it, until I bought a Kia car and now cant de-link the two words.

I do like left wing names though, Fabian, Aneurin (Nye) and Leo have all been considered.

Good traditional Scots name, to me. I know two: a teenager and a toddler. I really like it.

Names are definitely very subjective. I never made the K connection until I saw it pointed out on MN, and realised that lots of the names I don't like start with K.

Bizarrely, I quite like Kerr, that someone above suggested.

Ah, I didn't know that badtime. I like the way it sounds, but I first heard of it as Wayne Rooney's son, which puts me off a bit (though he did score last night so...)

Kai is not 'recently coined', it just wasn't common in the UK until recently. It is a traditional name in Germany and Scandinavia.

maggie - yes those are the ones. Hope they get replaced by some different contractors soon!

With a C is the Irish way of spelling these names I think, and we have no Irish links so might seem a bit odd. Am also trying to decide if Welsh names are out on that basis but that's a whole other baby-name thread. I'd like to be able to pick whatever nationality of name I fancy but suspect that I might be condemning my child to a lifetime of conversations beginning "Oh, Gruff, are you Welsh?" "No" "Oh....".

Ah, just saw your list of exceptions criminal. You don't think Keir would make it on to the list then? To my mind Karen and Killian are similar to Kelly and Keiran so it just shows how these things are subjective.

Thanks Efferlunt - yes, that's dh's objection - he is left wing actually, but thinks people will think that's why we've chosen it and that it's a bit of a statement, which he'd rather avoid. Think I could forgive the spelling mistakes - had to google it myself!
