Girls names to go with Alexander...

Having a few problems choosing a girls name for our daughter to be and hoping some of you can help.

We have a little boy called Alexander but always call him Alex.

Our favourite girls name is Alice. I think I already know the answer but is alex and Alice just too similar? Just need some second opinions before we completely rule it out...

There are a few others I like but mostly friends have used them.

And Scarlett came up recently. We are quite traditional (boring I guess!) so does that sound a bit adventurous???

Thanks :-)

I know an Alex and Eloise as siblings.

The name doesn't have to "go with" Alexander, whatever that means. You just need something that won't cause confusion.

What is it that you like about Alice? If it's the end sound, there are lots of names that end in -ice, -is or -ys.

What about Alison? Might be just different enough to avoid confusion, and it's a nice medieval name that isn't used much right now.

Thanks everyone, some great ideas. You have put me off scarlett now!

Current favourites are Lucy and Amelia but really like a few others you have suggested (Harriet is very pretty) as well. It would be Charlotte, Isobel and Sophie too but I have close friends who's little girls have those names...

And like Alice as a middle name so maybe that could work.

Thanks!

I have an Alexander known as Alex and a Kennedy, which I know isn't to everyone's taste but I love it

AberdeenAngusina · 25/06/2014 11:04

I like Alexander and Catherine, shortened to Alex ad Katie.

I know two Alex and Lucy sibling sets, one Alex and Connie (shortened from Alexander and Constance) and one Alexander and Florence.

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 24/06/2014 10:28

I have an Alexander (known as Lex) and my daughters are Sarah and Mary, and I'm expecting a Harriet. (Well at least she's a Harriet at the moment).

TheLeftovermonster · 23/06/2014 14:16

Alexander is the kind of name that goes with pretty much anything. Apart from Alice.

Sidthesausage · 22/06/2014 21:41

Florence

Before I'd even opened the thread I thought 'Alice'!

I know an Alexander with a little sister called Phillipa.

Yama · 21/06/2014 20:23

The Alex i know has a sister called Lucy. They are lovely.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 21/06/2014 20:19

Josephine?

Alex and Josie have the same kind of feel to them -familiar, laid back, cheerful names - and like Alexander, Josephine is a classic.

Miriam
Meredith
Camille

I have an Alexander who we always call Alex. His sister is Emma but we also liked Julia and Heather. Love Scarlett - you could shorten it to Lettie or Lottie if you wanted. Alice is definitely too similar.

BreeVDKamp · 21/06/2014 19:44

Alice as a middle name? :) my name is listed above and my middle name is Alice :)

Bootoyou2 · 21/06/2014 19:39

Elizabeth . Lovely strong girls name but with so many pretty nicknames for younger children/babies etc

singaporeswing · 19/06/2014 05:19

Charlotte Alice sounds gorgeous.

I know a little Alexander and his baby sister is called Penelope nn Pops.

I like the idea of a longer name with a shorter nickname to fit in with Alexander/Alex. Follows the same sort of pattern.

escape93 · 19/06/2014 04:10

From reading through this, I really like Beatrice.

Alexander and Beatrice go well together, as do Alex and Trixie, imo.

whoops -- lots of x-posting

mathanxiety · 19/06/2014 04:04

I know it's popular but I really dislike Scarlett.

How about:
Louisa
Leonora
Helena
Jessica
Kathryn
Theodora
Christina
Greta
Kirsten
Rachel
Elsa or Ailsa
Edith
Anna or Annabel
Juliet
Rosalind
Josephine

Kantha · 18/06/2014 21:42

I know an Alex with sister Elodie.

eatyourveg · 18/06/2014 20:32

No, Scarlett doesn't match Alex at all. The sisters of the Alex's I know are Emma, Stephanie, Lucy and Rosa but I'm sticking with my original offering

MostlyMama · 18/06/2014 18:12

I have an Alexander and his sister (my eldest) is called Amelia, I think it goes quite well :)

lp2014 · 18/06/2014 18:10

Hi, congratulations! I think Alex and scarlett sounds lovely! Best of luck xx
