Someone I know has just called their baby this, and I think it's so cute, but a few people looked a bit Shock when they heard the name. Just wondering if it's generally popular on MN?

I love it ( and I was not a fan of Thatcher at all). it wouldn't stop me using it at all. Rather, it reminds me of my childhood when I had several Aunty Maggies and they were all lovely.

The other version of Margaret I love is Greta. I think Maggie has an equally Scandinavian or German sound.

I love Margaret and would use the full name on the BC.

I would be more likely to associate Maggie with the much-beloved Maggie Smith than Thatcher at this point.

Like Penguins I don't understand how the name has been so blighted by association with Thatcher while other names from the Thatcher period have emerged unscathed. My own family has so many Margarets they are all known by different nns, including the Irish version (Mairead). I knew a lot in school in Ireland, and all of my DCs had at least one Margaret or Maggie (always short for Margaret) in their classes in the US.

I'd do it. I'd name the baby Margaret, and use Maggie as a NN. I also like Peggy

I used to like it a lot until a relative named their baby Maggie and now I can't bring myself to refer to her by name. I don't even really understand why!

I quite like Maggie, but I'm not sure I'd use it for a baby because of the Thatcher. I know that's not really logical though.

I did have a guinea pig called Maggie so I still got to use it - I usually give my pets names that I like but would never get to use on a child.

We know a little one, and it's not short for anything. It really suits her. It's strong and to the point, not too girly, and different enough to be a bit cool.

I don't get the Thatcher obsession with Margaret. She was a Margaret at a time it was a massively popular girls' name. Almost everyone has one somewhere in their extended family back a couple of generations. I don't understand why people link the name to her in a way that Joseph or whatever doesn't get written off.

It seems to suit this one well. Wink

She is Margaret really, but we call her Maggie most of the time. And we're American so Thatcher isn't a concern for us.

I've got a Maggie- she's actually Margaret, and I hoped it would somehow morph into Peggy, but it's been Maggie since she was born

I love it, really suits her- haven't regretted it for a second

It has a harsh sound, not pretty at all, and is not really a name in its own right (should be Margaret or something). Then there are the unfortunate associations ...

It's what we planned to name DS, had he been a girl. I might have given her Mary-Margaret, tho.

It's OK. Just be prepared for everyone to assume that it is short for Margaret. It might be a better idea to use Margaret and then just shorten to Maggie, then your daughter can chose what she wants to be called when she is older.

I like Margaret BTW.

I love it. It's The Simpsons baby, but that makes me like it more.
