Does everyone think the spelling of my chosen name is odd??

Hubby and I just found out we are expecting a little girl.

We have chosen the name Sofee but everyone thinks we should spell it a more traditional way.

Am I just being weird??

don't do it - she will be spelling her name out to people her whole life....

I have an unusual spelling of a conventional name and really there's no point - life would have been easier (and my name pronounced exactly the same....) if my Mum had gone for the conventional spelling.

worriedaboutnewjob · 05/06/2014 12:44

If I met a child with the name spelt like that, I'd assume the parents couldn't spell. It's awful.

PomeralLights · 05/06/2014 12:39

It's worse than with or without an 'e'. If the name has usual variants people on the phone listen out for it. If your name is just spelt bizarrely people don't listen for it the same way and get it wrong ALL THE TIME. It's because they hear a difference and then they write down the rest of the word as they expect it spelt. Then you have to spell it again and they go 'oh! With a F?!' Then 'oh! With TWO Es?!' 'Right, OK, do you mind if I just read this out again....' (Subtext: because I cannot believe this is right. This is a name I know. How is it so wrong?)

I know this is better now for people who are younger because alternative spellings are becoming more popular. Still, don't do it to a kid. To a person. I wouldn't do it to someone I disliked let alone my own kid who I'm supposed to love! I do hope this is a joke, btw.

weatherall · 05/06/2014 12:38

It looks like a cross between settee and sofa.

It's cruel to give a child a name that makes it look like their parents are illiterate.

EasyWhiteChocolate · 05/06/2014 12:38

I personally don't mind spelling names slightly differently, but I would read that as Soff-ee rather than Soaf-ee.

fuzzpig · 05/06/2014 12:35

*(sofa/settee combination)

fuzzpig · 05/06/2014 12:35

(Sofa

fuzzpig · 05/06/2014 12:35

Just makes me think of living room furniture.

ivykaty44 · 05/06/2014 12:34

I would assume it was said like toffee but with an s on the front - is that how you want the name pronounced? Or do you want the name to be pronounce Sophie?

Just curious as I work with someone who has her very normal name, spelt correctly pronounced very oddly?

yellowdinosauragain · 05/06/2014 12:33

My niece is Lillie. However, they don't live in the UK and that is the more common spelling where they are (according to my sister who is neither thick or aspiring to unique and different)

In general I think making up a different way of spelling is pointless. If you like sophie then spell it like that, or sofie if you must. Sofee, as others have said, is ridiculous. Many many people will judge you.

Your choice if you are happy with that for you and your dd!

Thurlow · 05/06/2014 12:31

I'd spell it the more traditional way. Your DD will have a life ahead of her spelling her name out every single time she has to give it to someone. As someone with a name that can be spelled with or without an 'e', it drives me bonkers. And that's without the possibility of a comment every time - "oh, what an unusual spelling..."

DramaAlpaca · 05/06/2014 12:30

Sofie if you absolutely must. But Sofee? No.

PomeralLights · 05/06/2014 12:30

My RL name is an oddly spelt version of a 'real' name. I HATE IT!!! I cannot emphasise enough how ANNOYING it is! And yes, I could get my name changed by deed poll or however you do it, but I didn't even realise I could do that until I was post 18, had A level certificates in that name, enrolled to uni.... There has never been a convenient time to change it and it would just confuse all the people who do know it EVEN MORE! At least I am lucky because my name can be shortened to a nn so I only have to use my ridiculous 'real' name for official things, which is the reason why I never changed it. Probably if I'd been unlucky enough to be called 'Sofee' I would have bit the bullet and done it.

This is not just your baby this is a real person who has to grow up, go to job interviews, get professional certificates.....please please PLEASE do not do this to her!!! I only hope, if you do, that she grows up more tolerant if it than me. It is still a big bugbear/issue between me and DM (who still doesn't see a problem, geeesh, but then she's disappointed I grew up to be an accountant and not a hippy). You can't choose the personality of your kids, what if your kid is quiet/anxious/gets bullied, your name is a big part of who you are.

I agree with the people saying if you want the name to be different, please please use an actual name that is different / uncommon. Not a misspelling of a common name.

DurhamDurham · 05/06/2014 12:27

Sofee would be mis-pronounced as So-fee with a short o if you know what I mean. I'm not sure of your reasoning behind incorrectly spelling a name on purpose Confused

SanityClause · 05/06/2014 12:24

DS was in a class with a girl called Lilie. That was her parents' "unique" spelling of Lily.

A Lily is a flower. To me, Lilie looks like you should say Lie-lee.

Itsfab · 05/06/2014 12:23

I am 42 and have had to spell both my names the whole of my life and I am sick of it. And all the names are the correct spellings.

Please don't do it. It looks awful and I would judge you as thinking you were cool, edgy and unique when actually you would just look stupid.

dinkystinky · 05/06/2014 12:21

Not a good way to spell it. Sofie is a legitimate variation on the spelling - Sofee is not.

nannyplum75 · 05/06/2014 12:20

surely this is a wind-up?

angelos02 · 05/06/2014 12:20

I would expect it to be pronounced SOh Fee
In that the Soh part rhymed with the o in Hop

fledermaus · 05/06/2014 12:20

Sofee is a bit odd, but Sofie is a legitimate spelling I think.

nulgirl · 05/06/2014 12:18

Along with most of the posters here, it would make me think you were illiterate. However it is completely your choice if that is the impression you want to give.

crazykat · 05/06/2014 12:18

Its a lovely name but please spell it Sophie. Its your choice but Sofee just looks like you can't spell.

I also hate when traditional names are given 'unique' spellings. Its also a pita when you have to keep correcting people when filling in forms etc.

I have a traditional name with at least half a dozen traditional spellings depending on region/country. I have one of the more unusual spellings (for England) and it has always driven me nuts having to correct the spelling.

badgerknowsbest · 05/06/2014 12:17

Sofee makes me think of a made up word for sofa and settee.

SweepTheHalls · 05/06/2014 12:17

Or is that spelled?!

buggerboooo · 05/06/2014 12:16

Yes its terrible and makes you look quite thick.
