I would never dream of going onto the relationship board with a writerly enquiry without making my intentions clear. Actually, I'd never even considered using that board for research

My nana was 94 on 6th may.. Born 1920 and is Mabel.. (I was due in aug but had mmc.. If it had of been a girl this would of been her name)
My nana's 2 older sisters were Clara and Florence.
My grandpa was born 1915 and was 1 of 10.. His sisters were Dorothy (dot), elsie, and ruby.

Well less so on this board than when creative writers do it on relationships or WWYD, admittedly. Over there it is upsetting.

In this case, you'd get a more authentic answer from me than if I was trying to tailor to what I consider fair to inflict on a 21st century child.

She could have googled just as easily if it was for a child. How does this make a difference.

farfrom, maybe you can acknowledge the MN posters in your book. Perhaps a % of the royalties to make good.

My mum was the youngest of ten, 8 of which were girls. Her older sisters were born in the 1920's. Here are all of their names:

Slightly confused farfromtree if you are a fiction writer looking for a female name for a character born in the 1920's why didn't you just google "popular girls names in the 1920's"? Rather like the poster who listed 50 of the top 100 names for you?

My great aunts all born in the 20s are Ivy, Dolly, Mary and Betty. I have Austrian family on the other side called Magda, Mari and Dora

I was going to suggest going into any nursery in north London. but actually I only know about 15 on that list (as under fives).

Both my grandmothers and one great-aunt is on there, and feel like my other 2 great aunts, Pam & Daphne, should be.

I also knew a Hildergard, Vida, Ruth, Bunty (christened Lilian) Freda, Amy, all of which were born in or around the 1920's. Sure you've prob got a name by now anyway....Grin

There's a huge thread on The Chalet School. If you have a look there (for the pre-WW2 books), they are school girls in the 1930s, so would have been named in 1920s. It'll show you which European names were recognisable in UK then too.

And by that reckoning, you'd probably need to go for Joey, Madge or Grizel.
