...for a girl. Has Biblical references and means date tree but I think river in Cornwall so would pronounce Tay mar. Too masculine? Bit like calling a kid Thames or strong and unusual? Opinions welcome.

It's a nice name. There is a great book for young people called Tamar (the main character's name in it is Tamar). I don't think anyone in it gets violated by their brother either!

Oooh I loooove Tamar for a girl. The only Tamar I've ever met was a boy, and I thought it was a weird name. But actually love it for a girl! Sounds glam. Don't know anything about the bible or river though but other people saying they're not good connections puts me off :(

I love this name and would have liked it if we'd had a girl, as dh is Jewish. I met a Tamar at the synagogue we used to go to, it's not too unusual in Jewish circles.

Its a river.

There is a bridge over it.

It drains into Plymouth Sound (from memory).

Not the most romantic of rivers (although bits are nice).

Its a pretty name but to me sounds slightly unfinished (I think of Tamara) and does sound like a river.

One of the Summer Isles by Ullapool is called Tanera. I always that that would make a pretty name, without any (as far as I know) connotations of incest!

I had a great-aunt called Tamar. She was always known as Tamar-Elizabeth (Elizabeth was her middle name), it was never shortened.
I think it's a great name and I would have loved to named DD the same. DH wasn't keen.

Tamaris was also an ancient Greek artist mentioned in Bocaccio's Famous Women.

I know a little girl called Tamar (pronounced Tay-MAR). Thought it was weird at first but I love it now, it suits her down to the ground- she is classically beautiful rather than 'cute'. I can imagine her having a very high powered job and what a strong name to go with it. Love it!

I agree with thursday, I live in Devon, the Tamar is a river. Its not a nice river! If you have ever read terry Pratchett's books the Tamar is Devon's answer to the river ank in ank morpork lol. To be honest I think its a nice enough name I just thought you should be aware

Perhaps consider Tamara?

I know two people called Tamar, one like the Cornish river and one the Hebrew for date palm.

I think they are both nice.

I had a friend at school named Tamaris (TAM-a-ris). She was named for the river - we were on the Devon side ;) I like it but then I had no idea of the biblical reference.

I know a Tamar. She goes by her middle name as she got so fed up with comments about the river and things along the line of 'lion tamer'.

I know 2, one pronounced like the river, one with the stress on the second syllable,

Er... Just read the passage and she was violated by her brother. Oh dear. So many beautiful names tainted with tragic stories.

There's only one Biblical Tamar I think. Never heard of the name outside of that story.
