Ok so first ever post so go easy please!

Only 16 weeks but after a number of losses getting excited about names this time. Just looking for ideas for names based on current lists below, you'll see we're really not the 'granny chic' type so anything like that is out. Popularity doesn't bother us and we seem to have different popular names beside us than the ones I've seen mentioned a lot on here.

Love Esme - it is one of my all-time favourite names. Like Zoe and Caitlin also. No strong feelings about your boys names, although I've only seen Ciaran used for a girl and Kieran for a boy.

From your girls list I like Lara and Zoe, and I like Orlaith but I prefer Orla. From the boys I like Daniel and Jack.

Thanks everyone - like I said, open to suggestions too as it's really hard!

In terms of spellings I am set on the ones above, Ciaran is the Scottish-Gaelic spelling whilst the Irish would have the accent over the second a. Orlaith is the one I've always preferred too.

Thank you manicinsomniac - there was something very nerve-wracking about putting them out there so nice to hear someone else likes them too :) I definitely found the boys easier.

Caitlin is on our list for a girl - love it! I also really like Evie on your girls list. Not that I don't like the others.
I like all your boys names. I used to know a boy at my after school drama club called Ciaran. Never seen it used for a girl?
Not much help - like them all! I think we have very similar taste in names!

I like Aiden, and love Logan and Finn.

I love Esme and Erin, and really like Ciara.

i like your other names too - I love the spelling of Orlaith but don't like the name as much shallowWink

Caiomhe, Saiorse, Róisín, Líadan or Niamh as girls suggestions, and Tadhg or Rory for boys based on your obviously celtic tastes! Also, Kit for a boy?

Ooh some good suggestions - Cairn is a new one to me but quite cute and sounds good with surname (which isn't the nickname I'm using) and actually Niamh should have been on the list to begin with! Some suggestions have been used by friends/family so they're ruled out.

TheWhispersOfTheGods - this is really odd as I've never been able to put it into words but completely agree on Orlaith! I think I love how it looks but when I actually say it I'm not as sure Confused .

We almost had a Cairn 13 years ago but where we lived at the time it came out as Kayrin in the local accent and so was just too girly.

The reason that we nearly had it was that poor No2 son didn't have a name at a week and a half old - we had by then resorted to sticking pins in a map of Scotland looking for inspiration and we kept on hitting the tops (cairns) of mountains.

Anyway, after much deliberation, we were left with Keir (my choice) and Ciaran (OHs choice) - we compromised and we have a Ciar. It made more sense for us anyway as Ciaran means the little dark one, the "an" being the bit that means little. Whilst he was dark, we didn't expect that he would remain little long - we were right, he is not quite 13 and currently 5' 10"! He also went blond just to confuse matters, but is dark again now :)

Thanks again all. That's a lovely story about how you chose Ciar, the thing that does put me off Ciaran is the meaning actually as I think it would be near impossible for him/her to be anything other than blonde so maybe not a very accurate name! x

If I was pretty sure that a boy would be blond, i think i'd have to go for Finn :)

I'd imagine an Erin, Ciara and Orlaith to be dark as well for some reason so would chose one of the others maybe Zoe or Lara (or Zara?)

Laura is one of my closest friends so it's definitely out, Abbie was ruled out for same reason too.

I think Finn is current favourite for boy (can see that as a blonde name) which is strange as before being pg Daniel had been the name for years. Girls are much harder!!
