Why does everyone hate Ellie so much?

I wanted an Ellie (with a full name!) Eleanor, Eliana and Elizabeth were all on our list of names to shorten, i have Eloise now and still love the name Ellie as well as her full version

My great Gran had a friend called Ellie not a shortened version like yours. Always thought it was a babyish name and didn't suit an old person. I was pretty horrible to her as a kid anyway, she was rather plump and I caller her Nellie the elephant

It is def good to see honest opinions. I would personally rather be an Olivia than a Tess or Jane though even if I had to share my name with others (which I do, as I have a tedious and overdone name!)

I love the name Eli and my best friend is Eli. My name has also got a mention here as common and twee.

It's just so common, I have looked after about 20 Elle's, Ellie's, Ella, it just tarnishes an otherwise beautiful name!

In about 10yrs it will be cool to use it again xx

You don't have to go the Muriel and agatha route to avoid overused names! There are standard names that are great but weirdly underused.

Walk away from Ellie Evie Olivia lily Emily Amelia tedious and overdone. Instead off top of my head Mary, tess, Zoe, Natasha, susannah and jane. Proper names but not overused.

Ellie is a gorgeous name but oh my GOD its everywhere - I am a teacher and there are at least 2 (often more) in every year group.

I have to admit that I do eye roll a bit when someone introduces another Amelia Grace or Lily Rose on Facebook or in RL - they are beautiful names but there are just so many of them, they will be the Lauras and Claires of the future (again beautiful names, but so many of the girls of my age are called it that even now we have to say 'Laura b' or 'Claire h'.

Having said that, my DD is one of the names that apparently is about to explode in popularity so I may have to eat my words.

I don't really know why people are getting cross at posters giving their opinions on this thread - that is the WHOLE point of this section: to give opinions that you wouldn't get in real life because people are too polite.

We are seriously considering Ellen which will most likely get shortened to Ellie

I didn't know they were disliked. Ava is one I am getting tired of. Every other bsby girl around here is Ava

I have an Eloise, nn Ellie. I love it, but then I can't stand frumpy names

I like the name and suggested it to my DH. Unfortunately it means rat in his mother tongue, so although he liked the name it was a no go.

Eleanor is a beautiful name, Ellie is not. It is exceedingly common and barely distinguishable from all the other billion Ella's, Izzy's, Evie's etc etc.

I've never encountered any negativity about the name anywhere else but NM.

I don't especially like Ellie but much prefer it to Nell.

I think it just seems a shame to shorten such a lovely name.

But then I'm a Rebecca who's suffered a lifetime of Becky - so many short names are so ugly compared to the original (imo)

I came on here once to read that the name I have given my child is so boring that I obviously didn't love my child enough to make her sound in the least bit special! We also have a nickname for her with a slightly unusual spelling - this emerged rather than was planned, but apparently that was 'try-hard'...

Ellie is a gorgeous name and Eleanor timeless. There is a reason some names are popular!

Eesh!! I've never been on one of these threads before everyone is entitled to call their child what they like.

My Dd really suits her name and I like it - that's all that matters

I don't like it due to its popularity. I quite like Eleanor which is an elegant name IMO but I dislike Ellen (no logic really).

Sophie, Ava, Isabel are equally common but to my ears they are 'full'names at least.

Overused to the extent it's lost any appeal agree with sqoosh. Not bad or awful just dull.

Isn't the whole point of these threads that people can give an HONEST opinion? The OP specifically asked us why some people dislike the name Ellie!

So, we're offering an answer. The name has been very widely used and some of us find it overused and twee. Nothing wrong with that, is it?

I have an Ellie and I love it - no name is going to be loved or even liked by everyone. The world would be a very boring place otherwise.

Nell is a lovely shortening of Elinor

I like / love it
