Iwan or Iuan ?

Just a bit worried about first one in case kids add a 'k' on his schoolbag at secondary school!!
Not keen on E as already have one .

Iwan is a very popular name here in Wales so I can't see there bring a problem. I've never seen it spelled Iuan. I have a Ioan, much less popular and people even in South Wales struggle to spell it. He gets Iowan quite a bit. And he gets called Loan or Iwan or Owen.

I'm a teacher in Scotland. The first time I was met with a little Ieuan, I had not one clue how to pronounce his name. I had never come across it before.
However asked mum and wrote it phonetically beside it (y-eye-yun) and never had a problem.
None of the pupils had a problem because they heard it before seeing it. They were also starting school so couldn't read anyway!
I presume people in Wales wouldn't be so confused. In the same way as up here names like Ruiaridh or Cairostaidh are seen more.
I love the sound of Ieuan but agree that he will spend a life time spelling it out to people.

Ha ha - don't go adding the k on now, then!!!! It was my husband who thought of that possibility. Wink
Thanks again for all suggestions. Still not 100% but have a while to go.

I dislike both a lot.

I would suggest Ewan. Having the same first initial is really not a problem, just give a different second initial so that the mail doesn't get mixed up.

My father's name is Iwan. I believe Ewan/Euan are the Scottish versions. Never seen Iuan and it wouldn't be pronounced like you'd want it to. Btw - DF has never (to my knowledge Grin) had a 'k' added to his name!

Cezella - the reason some people pronounce Ieuan like Ryan is because they're saying it wrong Wink.

Ok, I apologise- I'm not in South Wales! For speakers of the Welsh language though, phonetically that combination of letter sounds don't rhyme with Ryan- but I suppose that explains why Aneurin gets Nye in South Wales too!

I'm thinking Iwan, thanks for all the responses. Definitely ruled out iuan. On re-reading Wikipedia I think it's a Cornish version? ! Just got to think of one for his twin now!

North walian welsh speaker here. Ieuan very hard for a non-native but really cant see how it would rhyme with ryan.

Yep, I'm from south Wales. It always rhymes with Ryan down there, whenever I've heard it. I have occasionally heard it the yey-an way on S4C though probably from Gogs ;)

I know LOADS of Iwans OP- grew up in and live in North West Wales, I've never seen any of them struggling because someone's added a K to their name, it's a standard welsh name!

Iuan makes no sense to me as a Welsh name- Ioan is "yo-ann" and Ieuan is "yey-ann" (kinda- very hard to write welsh names in phonetic English!)

If you want the name Ewan without an E and with Welsh connections it's Iwan. I've never heard of Iuan and it wouldn't make sense with Welsh pronunciation.

If I liked Ewan I'd just spell it Ewan.

Intending as Ewan. Wikipedia lists iuan as a version but not seen it anywhere else. I know a ioan pronounced yowan. Hadn't seen ieuan, is that also pronounced ewan? Happy with Welsh connections. Just trying to avoid E.
Not so keen on Ivan.
Quite like rhys but some in family can't pronounce R very well!
Also like Adam but have a very boring surname and want something slightly different.
