sibling name rivalry

Reading another thread here got me thinking... Have any of you preferred your sibling's name to your own or used your favourite name for first child and prefer it to that of second? Or visa versa.
How important do you think it is to have matchy sibset names?

I'm the youngest of 6. We all had names that were very popular for the decade we were born in - think Brenda, Tracie, etc. I got tired of being one of 4 or 5 with the same name in every class and changed my name by deed poll when I was 16. Now I have the best name!

Frikadellen · 15/05/2014 21:12

NO i dont have sibling envy but then our parents picked AWFUL names for all 3 of us and none of us like any of our names.. I did like the reason for my mn though (I was named after an aunt who died) but really no one wants to be named the same as Hamlets mother even for mn

Swoosg · 14/05/2014 20:21

My sister has a great name with a great nn.... Mine is really dull. Hers has an interesting meaning, mine means nothing!!!

Have 2 dds, who both have pretty and meaningful names like my sis! But one was my perfect name and the other was picked by dh... It's not particularly me in the way dd1's is but I love it. She has said she doesn't like it though!!

ILoveCoreyHaim · 14/05/2014 09:25

Oops I used fave name for DD2 as at the time her DF hated it, we argued so much about it I said fine u choose names and I will use the one I like from your list. DD1 hates her name but loves DD2 name and the other name I had on my list. Dd2 also dislikes her name. Both of them like dd3 name and so does DD3 so at least I got one right

I have a typical 70s name (along the lines of Kimberley/Nicola), DSISes both have Timeless Classics. They all work together though.

DS1 and DS2 both have legit but rarely used names - both outside the top 500. They work well together. I'm not yet completely sold on DS2's (he is 4 newborn) but DH and I went through every single name list and it was the only one we agreed on. It's a great name. When I asked my MIL what she thought of it, she said 'I'm getting used to it' Confused

DS1's name is also divisive - in fact, a lot of people hate it. There was a thread on here recently in which 90% of posters said 'Don't call your baby that!' It's an amazing name with great heritage, family relevance and it suits him to the ground. But I did have a wobble at first because of people's reactions.

I love cherryblossom ikea. Similarly I wanted to be called Evangeline when I was a teenager. It was going to be my onscreen name (goes and checks phone to see if Hollywood have called yet)

atypicalwotsit · 13/05/2014 18:37

I love cherry blossom, ikeaismylocal!

I know an eirlys and jane. Welsh mum/English dad. And an imran and aiofe. Irish mum/Indian dad. "You name the first and i'll name the second"??

ikeaismylocal · 12/05/2014 11:57

i insisted that everyone call me cherryblossom for an entire summer when I was about 6 as I wanted a tree name too.

ikeaismylocal · 12/05/2014 11:55

I was very envious of my brother's name when I was growing up, his name is the name of a tree and fairly unusual but nice. I was given the name which was most popular the year I was born.

My children have unusual names as I so wanted an unusual name as a child. I hope my dc don't wish they were called oliver and sophia when they grow up! At least they both will have unusual names so they won't feel envious of each other.

nooka · 12/05/2014 07:01

I have a very very unusual name (never met another, only heard of one or two) my middle sister has a relatively unusual name (but quite common for Catholics) and my big sister has a name that my mother said wasn't common when she was born but was very popular by the time I was born (it's a classic). My brother's name is fairly unusual too, although quite popular now.

I don't recall really thinking about the differences, but then I've always loved my name. My middle sister does have a bit of a shocker as one of her middle names, so I'm glad I don't have that one!

I'm happy with both my children's names, and so are they (phew) but we did spend virtually the whole of my second pregnancy trying to think of another boys name we liked (and then we had dd!)

atypicalwotsit · 12/05/2014 06:44

I'd love to have boys name! Like Lionel shriver. Abel is cool

OP posts:
TaperJeanGirl · 11/05/2014 23:30

Her name is Abel Smile

SpeedwellBlue · 11/05/2014 14:33

Can we know what the name is Taper?

Orangeisthenewbanana · 11/05/2014 12:12

We really preferred our chosen girls name over our boys name (fortunately we had a DD!). We'd still use the same boys name if DC2 is a boy, but I can't imagine what we'd choose for another girl as we love DD1's name so much!

TaperJeanGirl · 11/05/2014 12:08

I reckon dd4 might have name envy, she is my 5th child and 4th daughter and after naming 4 girls ( with lots of middle names) I literally ran out of girls names I liked...so I gave her a boys name I loved....not unisex like Charlie/Sam/Billie ..... Male like john....she does have some girls middle names she can use as she gets older if she hates her name.we did try to use the middle names when she was a few weeks old but none of them stuck, her first name hasn't actually stuck and she goes by "baby" most of the time....she will cost me shitloads in therapy that one!

alita7 · 11/05/2014 11:59

Me and my brother both got great names :)

TheHorseHasBolted · 11/05/2014 11:46

I had a traditional verging on boring sort of name (though the short form is OK), my little brother has a Scottish name that was really really unpopular when we were young, but has become quite fashionable now. He hated having an unusual name and people always asking how to spell it or what it was short for (it wasn't short of anything) or, occasionally, coming out with "ooh, we used to have a dog called that". He is kind of enjoying the fact that in his 40s you can finally get personalised stuff with his name on. I would have liked a trendier name when I was young but I feel fairly neutral about it now - it's just "me".

MabelSideswipe · 07/05/2014 12:15

My sister got a nice unusual name that it still ununusual and I got one that became common a few years later. I prefer her name but she says its a dog name. I like all my children's names equally and they are quite themed.

olaflikeswarmhugs · 07/05/2014 12:08

Yes I prefer DDs name to ds name . I still today 9 years later know I went with the right decision about DDs name and I love it . Ds I'm a bit "meh" about . He's 18mo and I just never found a name I loved like I love DDs , and just went for the nicest names dh and I compiled .

If you want to know the names on me Grin

TessOfTheFurbyvilles · 07/05/2014 12:02

One of my friends grew up with sibling name envy.

She was named after her mum's best friend (who had sadly passed the previous year), and the name was "of the period" when the friend was born, but very much dated when my friend was born in 1982. Think of a name in the vein of Brenda and Denise.

Her younger brother and sister, both got classic names, not dated ones like hers.

She ended up reverting to her middle name, which is a more classic name, and far from being upset about it, her mum actually concurred that perhaps she'd have been better off using her friend's name as the middle name and not the first.

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 07/05/2014 11:48

I couldn't understand why my parents picked my name (all through school felt it to be massively unpopular and old-fashioned) and a few years' later gave my DSis a much more modern name. When it came to my own DCs I was keen to choose with DH names that flowed together and didn't sound as if they came from different eras.

atypicalwotsit · 07/05/2014 10:47

I wonder what dds will think of their names. One has a flower name and the other a 70's classic, tho she is a baby!

I think lots of people go through a phase of wanting another name. I know I did tho rather like my name now

Doodleloomoo · 05/05/2014 19:54

My mum gave me the name she loved and always wanted for a daughter etc etc. I like it, but it's very common in my age group and will 'date' me to the 80s more and more I think.

She gave my sister a name I know she likes, but not as much as mine. I much prefer it to my own, it is timeless, pretty, and not very common.

It's not something any of us deeply think about. As long as a name isnt outrageous (or made up imho) sibling names aren't important.
