Can I have just Liv? DD is just Meg, so im not averse to having a shorter name on the BC but I love Olive and DH loves Liv.

As Alis says, Liv is a name in it its own right.
Nothing whatsoever to do with Olive or Olivia.
It comes from Old Norse and means 'protection' or 'life'.

Older/filmbuff Mumsnetters may remember wonderful Norwegian actress, Liv Ullmann, Bergmann's muse.

I hate the idea you need to have a longer name you dont like as much just to be able to shorten to one you do.
When trying to pick girls names I liked Izzy but not Isabel, Lottie but not Charlotte....

I knew a Liv growing up, was pronounced "Leev".

I would assume Meg was short for Megan (I live in Wales) unless the person was Greek.

But if the person in question went by Meg there would be no reason for me to ever use the "long form" and I'm sure I'd realise quite quickly.

As it goes I prefer standalone Meg to Megan and infinitely more than Margaret.

Liv is just fine.

If your going to call her Liv, then I don't think you need any longer name on the bc. Liv is nice, call her just Liv.

What's the issues with people assuming a name is short for another name? If it isn't

I wouldn't meet a meg and say your name short for Megan? If they have introduced themselves as meg I could maybe assume it but why would you ask

My friend has a Livi, she is just Livi. No-one has a problem grasping this. Liv is a good name.

Teachers at DD's school often call pupils by what they assume is their full name, either as a joke or if they are telling the pupil off. So the child with a shortened name might care.

I would. I guess it is an age thing. Most people my age and older would assume a shortened name to be just that - short for something else. Or people are just being polite.

Emily is lovely but said along with Liv sounds a bit like "Liver Millie"! I would therefore personally avoid middle names beginning with most vowel sounds.

Id like a traditional middle name, DDs is Alice, so something similar.

People can be politely corrected then can't they Bun, as mentioned above Liv is a full name with both Hebrew and Norse roots.

I'm not keen on Olive, but like Olivia. You just need to take into account that people will assume it is short for Olivia whether you like it or not.

DH really doesnt like Olive, so wont want that on the BC but if I did have Olive id no doubt call her Liv more oftenthan Olive.

Liv it is!

No idea what sort of middle name would go.....any suggestions? Our surname is very very similar to Cavendish.

Liv is a full name in it's own right. I know a Liv although it is pronounced with a long i sound (more like Leev).
