We're looking for a girl's name which isn't too cute/popular/pretty/girly...! We have lots of Welsh relatives despite not living there ourselves so wouldn't mind something welsh. Also lived in new Zealand for quite a while and liked some of the Maori names.

So far our options seem to be:

Olive Grace
Carys (Joan?? Grandma's name)

Any opinions on them or new suggestions??

Thanks :)

Olive - 'On the Buses' (showing age!!!!)

I really like both. DD is Cerys (ummed and ahhhed for AGES on Cerys vs Carys). Funnily enough Oliva was going to be her middle name right until the very last minute and we went with a scottish middle name because she has a Welsh first name and an English surname (and we live in Scotland).

But between Olive and Carys my vote would be Carys

Just for some variety, I think Olive is a lovely name whereas Carys sounds hard and reminds me of 'callous'.

Carys

Olive along with Pearl have to be truly the most awful names on the planet. All I can think of with Olive is Olive Oil out of Popeye or a hard bitter fruit. Why would you name your child that???? Confused

Carys is fine and I don't actually know of any RL.

Carys is quite common here now. Not just common "popular", but common.

Carys. Much prefer it to Olive (even though I have DS16 called Oliver, Olive just seems so much "harsher" and harder to carry off?)

Carys is lovely :)

Olive is a tricky one, not helped by the vast numbers of Olivers and Olivias under age five.

Carys is beautiful.

Carys.

Olive isn't just not pretty-it's ugly.

MothershipG · 21/04/2014 10:25

Please not Olive, I really think that would be a hard name to carry.

I love Welsh names as well, there are loads of great ones, I like Tegwyn, Mironwen and Myfanwy, but unfortunately don't have enough of a welsh connection to get away with them!

Carys is gorgeous!

Also, Cerys.

Oh I love Carys Joan...I always liked Joan a lot and Carys is so pretty.
