aaaagh... boys names!

Hello,

We've just found out that our third (and last!!) baby is a little boy and of course we have a million beautiful names for a girl, but are really struggling for this little chap.
Our Ds1 is 14 months old and having spent nine long months, quite recently, chosing his perfect name, every other name has been rejected at length.
We went through a phase of super posh (and yes, pretentious) names, but we've discovered that we're really quite ordinary and we would seem a bit daft calling out a name more fit for an ancient greek philosopher in our local park.

So... We've boiled it down to the following...

Henry
James
Stanley
Hugo
Spencer

Siblings are Isabella and Arthur
Surname, one syllable, begins with H.

Any favourites on the list above or similar/ not so similar additions would be most welcome.

Totally stumped on this- they're all 'ok', but I'm not in love with any of them.

All great apart from Stanley and spencer. Stanley is an unattractive name IMO. Spencer? What are you thinking? And how different is it from the classy names in the list? Awful.

'Baby House' is an Aussie company. Perhaps you stick with that as the name and persuade them to sponsor you? Grin

I don't see what's wrong with Frederick House. Or the Ethan/Aidan/Liam combo suggested. Like someone else said-avoid single syllable names. The longer the better.

Ha ha ha... Animal charity! Love it.

Poor boy. Not sure about the foreign aspect, although I have Italian roots, Dh is staunchly English and would veto without so much of a 'how exactly do you pronounce Oisin darling?...'

He likes Freddie, George, Henry... Think English royalty I suppose, but the good ones have been taken.
He's pretty stuck on Henry, but I just find it a bit commonplace??

Poor Baby House. I love Raphael, bit Dh veto'd.

'Veto' is starting to sound like an attractive option!

As the bearer of offspring with a lovely but tricky surname, I sympathise.

How about going for something non-English to get away from the solicitors office/animal charity connotations? eg

Marco House
Lorenzo House
Matteo House

Oisin House
Cormac House
Donnacha House

Louis House
Reuben House
etc

Not necessarily any of those, but something more international might sound less Hampton Houseish. Good luck

I think any name that can also be a surname adds to the museum connotation although that rules out most of your list - not trying to be unhelpful.

I do like the shorter names combo unlike most here! Tom for example...

When I read your OP I thought Henry sounded the nicest with your other DCs (love their names by the way) but I don't think Henry House really goes.

Agree with PPs who've suggested a longer name, shame about your brother using Sebastian. What about Rafferty, Theodore, or Matthew?

Henry is my all time favourite boys name I adore it and it goes well with the sibling names. I also like William nn Bill think that would be sweet

I think Hugo is the loveliest name on your list, but James is the one I think works best.

(And I do have a sneaky liking for Ptolemy).

Some other suggestions: Dominic, Piers, Frederick (Freddie), Michael, Raphael (if he's vetoed Gabriel, perhaps the other archangels might work better), Edward (but not Teddie or it sounds like a nursery toy), Theo?

Miles is awesomes, but a funny mouthful with surname.

Tbh I love lots of boys names it would seem, but stupid surname is an issue.

When we got married, it turned me from an italian exotic beauty(!)... to a kebabary.

Stupid surname (honestly, pregnancy hormones not making it worse or anything!)

Gabriel has been on the table and dismissed with a quick discussion on what it could be shortened to... Gay House was never going to go down well with Dh.

God, I'm making Dh sound like a homophobe!! He's not at all, he just doesn't want our baby to be a target for idiots later in life.

Shame, because I love Gabriel.

Like Jonty, but Jonathon makes me 'uncomfortable' I can't explain it, but it gives me the creeps a bit!!

Who else even thinks about Julian Clary these days? Need to go to work on your DH about that one, because that's the most stupid veto reason ever. Fair enough if actually he doesn't like it, but not because of some entertainer who isn't even really on telly any more.

Same thought on the length, but Dh is Benjamin, Joshua used by three family members, Benedict too similar to Dh, Sebastian used by my brother... who has SEVEN children, each with three names! So options are so limited.

Back to the greek ponsey names... please welcome Ptolemy Herculese House...

Love Julian and Julius, but Dh has vetoed due to Julian Clarey. Men really are daft.
I'm so stuck and we're running out of time. Really don't want to end up with name regret.
Dh suggested William and then sniggered 'Willy House...'
If his father makes fun of his name, what on earth are other children going to do!

Ah I see. Dilema. But on the upside, nothing you call him is going to work, just some less bank sounding than others I guess! So you could name him almost anything you like but agree totally that Stirling sounds like a bank or solicitors office.

Long shot but can you kids take your surname?

Of your shortlist I like James the best, but none goes particularly well with the surname House. What about:

Henry is top choice at the moment, as it doesn't sound to bad with surname, but, every other baby is either a Oscar, Oliver or a Henry around here.
