Help, is it a boys or girls name?

I have worked with children for the last 20 years so I am finding choosing a boys name hard as nearly every name links to a child I know. I found the name Leighton on a boys name list, never heard it before and I like it but when I googled it I keep finding female Leightons. There is no way my DH will allow the name if he thinks its a girls name. Can anyone help?

Is it welsh , years ago there was a darts player called Leighton Rees .

Traditionally, it's a boys' name, but I think it's picked up popularity as a girls' name more recently, particularly in the US: I read a couple of US blogs written by women who have daughters called Leighton, possibly Gossip Girl inspired.

I can't imagine it'll really take off over here, but you can never tell.

It was a boy's name, but with Leighton Meester being the current Most Prominent Leighton I'd be wary of using it for a boy at the moment.

My friend has a boy called Layton (spelt this way)

I only know it as a surname but I'd say it sounds more masculine than feminine.

The only time I've come across it is the actress from gossip girl , Leighton meester so to me it's a girls name .

I would say girls name as I've only heard of actress Leighton meester with that name, she's from gossip girl

I know a little girl called Leighton. I think it suits a boy more though.

It's a boys name.

It's pretty Americany sounding when you say it, I think.

I know a Leighton, he is most definitely a man. I have never come across it as a girl's name.
