What do you think of name list I have got so far?

They're all Greek names, but I'm expecting twins so I have to choose things that somehow fit. Ideally, I'd like to name them after someone, but I'm still gathering ideas, and may use his name as a middle for both of them.

For boys, I've narrowed it down to, as nothing else seems to fit:

Alekos
Dimos
Thanos

For girls, I've got more ideas, and recently added some more:

Aliki
Areti
Athene
Callisto
Nefeli
Stavroula
Stefina
Theano

Both of my daughters have names with 3 syllables, so the girls have to fit this. My dad told me that they're all terrible, so I'm not sure what to make of this. Blush

I like Alekos and Aliki but I wouldn't use both of them for twins as I think they're two similar.

I know an Athene who isn't Greek.

Does Greek not follow the more usual 'a' ending for girls and 'o' for boys? I quite like Calisto and Theano but somehow think Calista and Theana would sound more feminine - or are they not actual names?!

I like Filippa/Filippos but, with Filippa in particular, I suppose you run the risk of looking illiterate if you aren't Greek

all our kids have Biblical names.
partially because we like them, partially because we are Christians and we want names with great meanings and "ancestors"

That's not popular on MN either - but it doesn't bother me at all!Grin

Why is having a theme daft? Lots of people have themes for the names of their children. I understand if you don't like the names, there are lots of names on the threads on here that I don't like. Confused

I do like Melissa, but it's a bit too matchy with Marina. Sad

Goodness, all this angst over names. I must be so slack. My criteria was

do the initials spell out something - change if they did.
If there is a nick name from the full name do I like it.
All children had to have a different initial.
All had to be proper names and nothing made up so that everyone can spell them (sick of spelling my name).
Not named after anyone in the family.

Actually, the twins do have a Greek connection, as their dad was Greek. I don't have a Greek heritage. I'm Welsh with a Czech/Lebanese heritage that I haven't grew up with. My name is English and my (half) sister's name is French. Confused

Agree Zen ....strangely enough my very Greek friend hasn't gone down the strictly Greek route for her own 4dc. They have family names though and a Greeker than Greek surname which I love Smile

Awful. I agree with your df. I hate names out of place. Fine if dc have Greek heritage otherwise would be terrible to be landed with one of these names and 1) spend your whole life spelling it or correcting pronunciation and 2) answering questions about Greek connections with a 'none'! (I had a polish surname and always had to explain my grandad was polish.)

Yes my friend winces when she hears Athena pronounced like the 80's card shop with a big theeeeee.

I don't think many of them are hard to pronounce. However, I think Areti and Athene have the potential to be mispronounced a lot. I've heard Welsh names mispronounced by the parents, it doesn't particularly bother me. Smile

I have a Greek friend who winces when she hears Greek names used by non Greeks and then pronounced wrong.

I'd check the pronunciations are spot if you continue with your theme.

Could sound a little 'naff' otherwise Confused

I've decided on the Greek theme, I do have my reasons, plus they're much more lovely than most Welshie names! Grin

I like my children to have a connection, and since their names aren't Greek or of the same origin, the 3 syllables thing is nice for girls. My youngest daughter didn't have a name that fit with my eldest's middle name, so instead of just Nia, I went with Fae (old version of fairy) Nia. If the twins are girls, they are likely to have two middle names. Confused

I do like Lysander, a lot.

I think Alekos and Aliki are really lovely together. But I don't know what I'm having until I get the CVS results back.

You wouldn't consider something Greek but a bit more familiar? If you have no Greek connections, your list is a bit unusual.

I know a man called Dimitri. He has no Greek connections whatsoever and I always find it odd!
