What do you think of this little girls' name?

Vera? I am due end of May and had not even considered it but I was watching a movie with Vera Farmiga last night and it just jumped out at me. I've been quite a fan of her's anyway for a while but had never really thought about her name. My friend asked me what the name of the actress is so I replied and as soon as I did I thought "wow...Vera!" and my hubby agreed.

Any thoughts? Middle name would almost definitely be Kate or Katherine.

Actually, I don't like most of the old lady names and had mentally automatically put Vera in this category because I had a great aunt called it (known as V), but stripped of those associations I think it's actually quite pretty. Which is more that I can say for Maud, Enid or Ethel... Much prefer Verity though, as a pp said.

Not bad - think it would grow on me tbh.

Certainly beats Beryl and Muriel.

I had Barbara on my short list - DH really really wanted it and I was dithering a little. It did tend to have the drawn in breath response when we said to anyone we were thinking of calling DD Barbara.

I think Vera is a bit like that - some people will be aghast and others quite like it.

If you like it then go for it.

I love a good old Grandma name Elsie and Dorothy were both on my list for my dd but for me Vera is just a step too far

I had an Auntie Vera too. She was lovely and really tiny (says me a gigantic 5ft) but had a big personality.

It's lovely! Once it's a baby's name people you know won't turn their noses up, it'll be your little baby. It is old lady chic but there won't be many others in her peer group, perfect!

Vera is short for Veronica, not keen on either.

I think the trend ATM is to find the most old ladyish name. Only those who are cool enough will 'like' it. They are very marmite names & I see the appeal in some, but not all. Never been a fan of nn as full name either.

Vivian & maude however, could make my granny chic list.

Vera is great, good meaning, fits the old lady chic trend and will be more popular in five years time. It is going to be one of those names which rises along with Jean and Joan. Ethel is leading them in.

Sorry too old lady for me. I'm not a fan of Edith, Ethel, Maude etc, and Vera sits firmly in that category for me.

I think Maud and Vera are equally awful.

Maud is lady of the manor awful and Vera is scullery maid awful.
