What will our grandchildren be called?

If you have babies/small children now, what do you predict they'll be calling their children in 20-30 years time?

I'm thinking of the names people who are in their 70s now will come back round:
Susan
Joan
Jane
Peter
Ron
Roy
Derek?

Along with more unusual non-traditional names.

I never knew! Things you learn on mumsnet eh? So I wonder what children in Ireland will be called in 20-30 years time?

I think names like Marilyn, Lovaine and Jean are going to make a come back pretty soon.

Irish people tend to be pretty conservative when naming their children. At the moment there are lots of Jacks and Sophies and things in a similar vein. As well as lots of Irish names.

They don't tend to go for the old man/old lady names that are popular in the UK, Stanley or Arthur would be considered very adventurous! There would be raised eyebrows and a bit of nudging 'Did you hear what Mary Murphy's sister's son called his daughter? You'll never guess. Ah try. Go on guess. I SAID GUESS................Matilda! Isn't that fierce fancy?

Martin and Nicole are in the top 100 names.

Most likely Spanish names, due to where we live. My eldest likes Valentín, Luciano and Lucas. For girls, Jazmin, Ariana, Lola and Sofia.

DD likes the name Niall (for Niall Horan), Theo, Matías, Joshua and Santiago. For girls, Julieta, Emma, Mía, Luna and Lola.

Thegreylady - dd2 was nearly Dorothy (or Dorothea) . I love the name! She ended up a Francesca due to 'th' pronounciatiin issues here.

Xander and xavier according to dd1 and they will be twins boys or ebony and ivory who will be twin girls! I very much hope she is joking and even tried to explain why not. She is 17 by the way so could be sooner rather than later Smile

I have my grandchildren :) i won't give all the names too 'outing' but I have an Edward and a Max and a Connie and a Sarah. Those are aged between 5 and 14.

With the normal 'rules' being that names come arnd every 90 years or so, then our children will name their children after names popular in our mothers' generation.

BUT with the internet and other connections, I think we'll see more and more foreign names being used, possibly from Asia, especially for girls. For boys, I think European versions of common names might become more popular.

Robin for boys is interesting Diamonds. I wonder if we'll see boys reclaiming names that the girls have taken.

Nancy is already coming round, I know 3 under 5.

On the boys front, traditional names like Richard, Simon, Stephen, David all seem to have fallen out of fashion so maybe they'll be back. Heard a little boy called Tim the other day and it seemed a bit odd.

Catherine, Victoria, Jennifer, Barbara, Elizabeth for girls?
