What will our grandchildren be called?

Ooh I'm going to ask my students this tomorrow! They don't like Simon cowells choice of name (they're teenagers) much snorting about it.

I'll have a look around my mum (Joan)'s care home next time I'm there and see if I can glean anything

I'm trying to think of the names of my parent's friends (so people who have grandchildren now). So far I have:
Pauline, Barbara, Alison, Eileen, Frances, Hilda, Kathleen, Joan, Jean, Linda, Lorraine.
Roger, Roy, Geoffrey, Gerald, Deryck, Jeremy, David, Stephen, Andrew, Richard.

Maybe Salma, Fatiha, Sakina or some totally different names from our culture? Like Lucy, Jane, Jannet, Peter?

Rose is a huge name in Ireland at the minute too, and Ava. Lots of Ciaras too. Irish names are coming back for boys - Cian, Cillian, Sean, Rian, Oisin.

I asked DS and he said Philip, Daniel, Emily and Ellen.

DS is 6 and his children will be Emmett and Lucy. That may change the next time he goes to the cinema.

My FIL was called Eric and our DD1's middle name is Erica, which she hates.

Now Simon Cowell has called his DS Eric I am sure it will become popular again.

DD wants to call her baby Crystal.
She is only 10.

I picked the names that i thought were the least fashionable possible ...

I think one of two things will happen (plus that the timeless classics will stay). Either:

What everyone else said about out parents' generation of names replacing the current Elsie, Martha, Nancy, Olive type trend.

OR

a much more futuristic, quirky kind of feel where people break free of what are traditionally thought of as names and we get more children called after things from nature, colours, foods, abstract nouns, places and random combinations of letters.

At least no one will mess with a boy called 'Machete'.

Machete, Lance, Owen and Chirag

Girls:

Scimitar, Bennett, Livvy and Pigs

Three of those are OK I suppose!

More new names will surely come up as well though! Things which would seem odd now, like Apricot or Water.

Also things which people often say they would like to use were it not for pop culture references, like Hermione and Luna, would be free to use again.

I know a Dorothy, nn Dora! There was a Colin at one of our baby groups a couple of years ago. Think he was Swiss.

Simon has to come back. It was hugely popular in the 70s. I think it's a really nice name. Weird how it's vanished.

Here, I'd love to see Nuala make a comeback. I've an 11-year-old Fintan, and that often draws comments about him having an old-fashioned name. Luckily he's an old-fashioned sort of a boy.
