Bryony.. Opinions?

What do you think of Bryony/Briony. Surname Thorne. I am thinking of Alexandra or Kate as a middle name

I think names cause less bullying now, generally speaking, just because there is so much more variety in names, greater multi-culturalism etc.

I like it. But I can't help thinking about Bryony the elf from Arthur Christmas. "I can wrap any present in the world using only 3 pieces of sticky tape!!!"

Probably just my rather odd sense of humour though.

Yes I'm in the UK.

It was probably just the shitty kids I went to school with, I get that they pick up on anything sometimes but it certainly made my life no easier having a name that make me stand out like a sore thumb.

Maybe it's more popular in other area who knows? I don't think the Op is considering it now anyway, what with the thorne connection (which wouldn't have even crossed my mind!)

OP I would expect someone trying to name a girl after a man called Brian to use 'Brianna' (rather american) not Bryony. Just can't hear that at all.

Maybe it is just my area, the brian thing was very much picked upon and was taken the piss out of royally through my entire time at primary school, and a bit of secondary school too. Didn't help I was in a class full of people with normal ordinary names.

Strawberryswing that surprises me. I know a few bryony's and I've always thought it was lovely ad others have said the same. I just never connected it to Brian. I still hae a way to go so will continue thinking. I am very drawn to briar

Ditch it, she will thank you for it. And people do say it brian-nee, whether you want them to or not. I was teased endlessly over how it sounded like Brian. And one or two people have told me they think my name is ugly Blush

If you actually like it, could you use it as a middle name. Alexandra Bryony Thorne for example? Middle names don't really matter IMO.

Thanks everyone. Yes I definitely wouldn't use Rose considering my surname. Thanks for the suggestions though!

If you're going to use Winslett as a surname, not sure I'd use Kate as a middle name.

I wouldn't put Rose with Thorne, even as a middle name, but no problem with Bryony and Thorne.

oh SolveaProblemLikeMaria I just saw your message! Yes it was a typo :) Not sure why it had to be pointed out in such a way...it's fairly obvious I just missed the key! But hey ho :) I agree I had never considered Briar Rose but I do remember thinking it was a beautiful name when watching Sleeping Beauty! Will see what the "to be" hubby things of Briar :)

Think I will have to ditch the name :( As some have said, I'm sure many people won't even know Bryony is a flower but I agree it does look a bit silly to those who are aware. fideline I really love Briar..hadn't thought of that! Will put that to the hubby :)

I was just going to say what fideline said, I have always LOVED Briar Rose so think Bryony is just as beautiful. Have you thought of Briar? And Alisvolatpropiis I'm fairly sure that was just a typo since the E and W are next to eachother

Wasn't Sleeping Beauty's real name Briar Rose?

Bryony Thorne has a similar quality. I like it. The name 'Bryony' is redolent of lawn dresses and hedgerows to me anyway. I think it's very pretty and evocative with the surname Thorne.

Of course if you go the DB route, most of the time DD would be known as Bryony Winslett-Thorne (middle names rarely get used) and that sounds lovely, has a good rhythm AND overcomes the overly horticultural thing if it bothers you.
