I'm really starting to warm to the name Olive, I think it has a fresh quirky feel to it, with a vintage edge at the same time iykwim Grin

I think it may be a marmite name....which is fine as I want something unusual!

I'm not keen on Olivia as it is overdone IMO.

So what do you think? Do you know any? Is it getting popular? What kind of vibe do you think it has?

Thanks in advance Smile

Love it! Also love that its an anagram of "I Love" Sadly it won't work with surname unless I would want any future dd to sound like she was named from a dulex paint chart!

pinkpeoniesplease · 13/03/2014 07:46

I ADORE this name OP, I am campaigning for DH to let me use this for this DC if it's a girl. I am not old enough to know the associations above, I think it's lovely! I like the nn Liv/Livvy.

puthyjip43 · 13/03/2014 05:40

Love it!

thegreatgatsby101 · 13/03/2014 05:36

I likel both Olivia and Olive. I don't think either are that popular or unusual around here, although I know that Olivia is nationally.

Chottie · 13/03/2014 05:18

Sorry no. It is such a harsh sounding name. Goes with Ena, Edna, Maud, Enid and Una.

Wishfulmakeupping · 13/03/2014 04:54

I like it much better than Olivia. I think its lovely.

Olivia is lovely. Olive ..... isn't. It's quirky but not in a good way, and doesn't have attractive associations. (Pickle in jar, oil, Popeye's girlfriend, etc.)

Yes it does seem to be getting popular (at least on Mumsnet) but I really can't see why.

AngryBeaver · 13/03/2014 01:02

My sons teacher is Olive (they use first names here) she's late twenties and quite quirky.
I have warmed to it, although I wouldn't say it's a "pretty" name.
Still, I quite like it!

sleepingbeautiful · 13/03/2014 00:53

Don't like it. Definitely with Edna, Bertha, Maud, Gertrude in my mind.

fideline · 12/03/2014 23:28

Bouquet the problem with associations and connotations is that you can't adjudicate them out of existence.

MummyBeerest · 12/03/2014 23:28

I like it. Only know 2. Olives are delicious.

kiwiscantfly · 12/03/2014 23:27

I love it but DH's last name is a colour, that really doesn't go with Olive sadly.

bouquetofpencils · 12/03/2014 23:26

I am 40 this year and have never seen an episode of On the Buses. I am aware there was a character on it who wore glasses called Olive.
But I think it is surely now time to let that Olive rest. It was a LONG time ago.
Olive is a lovely name. A snappier version of Olivia.

fideline · 12/03/2014 23:23

On the buses (deeply unattractive character)
Olive Oyl (popeye)
Olive oil

First three thoughts through me head. Sorry

EllenJanesthickerknickers · 12/03/2014 23:15

I'm old enough to associate it with 'On the Buses' and Popeye, so could never use it. Olivia sounds so much softer, prettier and more classic to me.

williaminajetfighter · 12/03/2014 23:12

Lovely name. Works well for 5, 45 or 84

Alisvolatpropiis · 12/03/2014 23:09

It's definitely the name for you (or rather, your daughter) then op - the Olivia vs Olive test as it were Smile

I must admit I'm frilly name lover and I'm Welsh...love an extra syllable! Grin

PreciousPeach · 12/03/2014 23:04

Alisvolatpropiis I find it hard to imagine why one would choose Olivia over Olive Grin

Alisvolatpropiis · 12/03/2014 22:56

Though not generally one for top 10 names, Olivia is so much more attractive than Olive I find it hard to imagine why one would choose the latter over the former.

Oodfanjo · 12/03/2014 22:55

I know two, both under one!

RabbitPies · 12/03/2014 22:51

It's ugly. A harsh sounding name IMHO.

evertonmint · 12/03/2014 22:40

This would be DC3's name but looks like it's a boy. It was almost DD's name but she didn't look like an Olive when she was born. Now she's 3 she totally could be an Olive so I really regret not using it even though I love the name we gave her. I'll never have an Olive as I'm done after this one - it will be my one regret about my children! It's such a fab name :)

PreciousPeach · 12/03/2014 22:37

Ok, I looked up the stats and it was ranked 260 th in 2012 so hardly overused or top 20 boring, which is good Smile
