Wondering what names would go well with Percy, for a boy. I don't like names that are common and I don't like way out there names. I'm more a old man kind of baby namer... Thanks in advance for suggestions Wink

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
GillTheGiraffe · 12/03/2014 10:34

Sorry - I thought she was asking for names that went with Percy i.e. as additional names to her intended name of Percy. The OP didn't say she had already anmed the child Percy. That fact didn't come up until a few posts later (as I can now see).

So, apologies if what I said has upset but I can't help the fact that Percy has been a sniggery name for the male member in earlier decades. Even the OP has acknoledged that. I just explained what those 'negative' connocatations are.

Don't shoot the messenger in your haste to find something offensive.

HyvaPaiva · 12/03/2014 10:33

GillTheGiraffe That's nasty. You aren't talking about a hypothetical possible name choice, he's an actual little boy called Percy.

Wishfulmakeupping · 12/03/2014 10:28

How fecking rude that's OP older child's name!
I stand by what I said Percy is a fab name (not that you even asked for opinions on it OP)

Bowlersarm · 12/03/2014 10:24

What a horrible post GillTheGiraffe That child has already been named Percy.

Your post can only be designed to upset, distress, or anger the OP.

No wonder someone started a thread about how many nasty posters there are now on MN. Quite true. One here to be added to the list.

OpalQuartz · 12/03/2014 10:23

Percy is the name of the OPs older child, so it is of no help to criticise that one. It's the not yet born child she wants advice on

Burren · 12/03/2014 10:18

I don't remember the OP asking for opinions on Percy. It's not a name I feel strongly about positively or negatively, but I knew a little Percy in Cornwall some time ago, and he was both delightful and apparently unscathed.

GillTheGiraffe · 12/03/2014 10:10

Percy is an absolutely dreadful name that has been used colloquially as a 'name' for the penis e.g. going to the toilet is Pointing Percy at the Porcelain.

Maybe the young generation don't see this connection but the older generations will. Poor kid to be saddled with such a ghastly name.

bouncingbelle · 10/03/2014 22:15

Boys called Percy/Wilfred would be laughed out of school where I live, but if you live in a different area mixing in only similar circles to yourself, am sure they are acceptable names.

I think Albert/arthur/Philip/constantine (con) would go well with Percy.

Chester sounds quite a 'cool' name but we had a school bus driver who was called this and we used to refer to him as Chester Chester child molester and that's all I can think about when I hear the name (nb the poor man was NOT a child molester)

LadyDowager, yes! Newcastle. I think it is the same family. R and P are the parents?

Burren · 10/03/2014 09:52

Four other girls in my class, not in my life!

Burren · 10/03/2014 09:51

I had the same name as four other girls in my life all through primary school, and it was a bit grim, to be honest. Not from the UK, and in the 70s there was a smallish, conservative pool of names, so it wasn't just my class, the damn name was everywhere. To this day, if an Irish novelist wants a generic name for a minor forty-something female character, that's the one they go for.

I did choose a name for my son in part on the grounds of its unusualness, as a result.

OP, why choose something to 'go with' Percy? Siblings aren't some kind of matching teaser. I have only one child, but if he had had a sibling, I would have wanted an entirely different 'style' of name.

Cornelius. Augustus (Gus). Thornton.

Martorana · 10/03/2014 09:41

"don't like to sheep though I'd rather my child was an individual"

Grin

So joining the flock of old man names will ensure that, will it? Don't worry, your child will be an individual even if he shares a name with 6 other children in his class- children are like that!

IkeaMeatballs I also know a Percy with brothers George and Henry - maybe the same family (NE)?

I like Arthur, Wilfred, Albert (Albie or Bertie as nn).

Thanks honey, britishbabynames is my favourite name blog. I'm on there so often I should know he whole thing off by heart. I'm having to wean myself off it though as DH hates it (he's a top 20 man) and he says its feeding my eccentric taste. It's my guilty treat at weekends and guess what it's the Weekend!
