The other half doesnt like this name, but I love it, I think it is really different.

Not a criticism, but when I first saw 'Obie' I thought 'Oh, is that a short name for Obama?'. Very probably, this isn't an issue. There's much to admire about Mr President and Mrs Obama, too, and by the time your baby is at school, there will be a different US leader.

I have actually met an Obie in real life. Internally I was Shock Hmm when he told me his name.

I sympathise with a desire for a comparatively unusual name (having spent my primary school years with five other girls with the same name in my class), but I do think Obie, with its cutesy sound and specific association with a Star Wars character, overly defines your son.

I came across a little Gandalf about fifteen years ago, and would (minus the 'cute' sound ) see it as having the same problem of having a single, very strong association with a character known to very large numbers from fiction and film.

I like Oberon too. And I LOVE Lysander (for a boy). And Hero (for a girl).

It might be a good thing that I don't have kids and don't plan to. Grin

I know an Obi, his is a nickname because his initials areOB. First name is Oliver.

I know an Obi, short for Oban. As far as I'm aware, he doesn't get the Star Wars references from other children (but then he is only seven, so plenty of time for that when he gets older, I suppose). I really like it.

It's not an anglicisation. Well, you could argue that it's anglicised because you've rendered it into our alphabet rather than the Japanese characters, but to all intents and purposes that's the original Japanese spelling.

If it's an anglicisation of Japanese then she can spell it however she likes...

I like the meaning as a shortening of Obadiah (which is a name nobody should ever use).

Spelt 'Obi' it means sash in Japanese, not 'Obie'. I quite like it, either way.

I like the name and my first thought was O.B. from Hollyoaks. The Star Wars thing genuinely didn't cross my mind - and I love Star Wars!

Could you give him a slightly more usual name beginning with O middle name B and then call him Obi - that way he has a really cute name when he is little but as he grows he has something more dignified?

I love the name Oscar...just a suggestion.

I think Grandad Obi is also cute and would suit an older person.

Obie meaning and name origin

Obie \o-bie\ as a boy's name is a variant of Obadiah (Hebrew), and the meaning of Obie is "servant of God".

Obi is a Nigerian name, so if you regard something being 'a black name' as a disincentive to use it, avoid.

Alfie's nice, but it's certainly not unusual!

I like Elliott, Caleb and Jacob from your list, but again, nowt unusual (if that's what you're after) about any of them either.

Your other name choices are better than Obie and Alfie.
