Why doesn't anyone like this girl name?

My thoughts on reading the word, in order:

elephant tusk... poaching... dead elephants and walruses... narwhal tusks... narwhals being harpooned by hunters... carved statues... white supremists... ebony and ivory (the band)...

At no point did an image of a little girl or a grown woman enter my thought processes.

That's what your daughter will have to contend with for her entire life with that name

I think if u like it then u should use it, who cares what other people think? People only generally comment with a negative rather than a positive. So there maybe lots of people who have read this and liked it but not said anything for fear of being shot down by others. I have a name for my daughter due in a few weeks that not many people liked on here but 90% of the people (not on mums net) I have told. It to have said they like it , some might be humouring me but most seemed genuine.

So if u like it use it.... It's your child... No one else's.

Rowan does indeed mean 'red' or 'little red' or 'little red-haired'. It's the English-language version of a Gaelic word.

In Celtic myths, Rowan is male - the son of the goddess Brigit.

It is sometimes used for girls, but, speaking purely personally, I'm not keen on boys names for girl babies. But clearly some people don't mind. That's up to them entirely.

I hate commenting on people's name choices usually but you did ask, OP. Please consider how it sounds together - my feeling is there are too many 'r's and it sounds a little clumsy together. I have this with my own name so I know what I say!! Also, if your child has trouble pronouncing 'r' she will struggle with her names. It's not an awful choice, but I do prefer names that are more traditional. That's just my preference. I agree to with above over 'white' connotations.

I agree with all the negative comments about Ivory, but think Rowan is lovely (can be a girl's or boy's name).

Doesn't Rowan mean red? So her name would be descriptive words of two different colours.

I don't think Ivory is the worst name I've heard but she'll be constantly saying "no, not Ivy...". What is it your DH likes about the name?

It would always have associations with elephant poaching to me. What if your daughter grew up to be a conservationist? Or even just supported animal rights. Imagine having that name then

It reminds me of killing elephants.
I do think it sounds a bit 'white supremacist' also.
Also makes me think of an Ivory tower - makes me think of someone thinking they're superior to others.

All round, not a nice word and I would think very carefully about using it as a name tbh - it has quite unpleasant connotations. Think what you would be doing to a child giving her that to live with....

Ivory isn't a name, it's a noun. It means 'white' so that's a bit weird, although I suppose people use the name Bianca. And mostly it just doesn't sound nice.

IMO I think it's a name that she would have to suit in appearance for it not to seem silly and it would be very difficult to tell if that's the case when she is a newborn. If she were very pale skinned and not freckly it would be ok, but if she was darker or rosy cheeked it wouldn't really suit her.

Yes the white supremacy thing too ... Thanks for putting that into words for me. If I met a ivory I would just maybe think the parents were a bit bnp or just a bit ignorant of why ivory items may look beautiful but have an ugly back story.

Because it's not a great name and is it even a name. Why should somebody want to call a baby girl an elephants tusk.

Rowan is and always will be a Boys name hijacked by someone who thought it was acceptable for a girl. ( IMO)

I don't think it's awful as a word if you don't look at what ivory actually is... It just makes me think f poor elephants being killed for their tusks

Secondly it has connotations of white supremacy and also elephant poaching.

Well generally I dislike vocabulary words as names (flowers, animals, virtues, etc) and then I particularly dislike misspellings of vocabulary words (ivorie).

But you shouldn't mention the name before the baby arrives. What were you thinking?!
