Why doesn't anyone like this girl name?

I kinda think it's entertaining that nobody likes our girls name suggestion ( well ok it's dh's ..I hate disagreeing with him ALL the time so iv told him I'll go with this one if he wants)

Ivory / Ivorie

I'm guessing you'll comment to say you don't like it ...just explain why pls.

I know a girl Rowan. Same age as me. Think it's a type of tree.

People don't like it because it is not actually a child's name and it has very unpleasant connotations.

I thought Avery was a boy's name? It is in Charlotte's Web (I think).

We know an Ebony as well! There must be a few of them about.

Would DH like Romilly or Mallory, Elodie, Jodie?

Mojo if I like a name I will say so. Much easier to give opinions when it is anonymous. If someone in real life asked me I'd be more diplomatic or probably say nothing/agree it was nice weakly.

I'm with SaggyOld, Avery is better.

I can sort of see your DH's point. Ivory is a beautiful thing and there have been many lovely things made of it. I suppose you could argue that it's no more tainted with cruelty than diamonds are, but, well, it does make me think of dead elephants too.

If you wanted to go completely ridiculous, how about 'chryselephantine'? Means 'made of gold and ivory'.

Ooh Avery is much better.

Falls foul of several MN "rules" but it is actually a name, and doesn't have bloodthirsty connotations.

Avery is almost exactly the same in sound, but the connotations are so much nicer. Would DH be persuaded to change ivory just a little into Avery? For the sake of his little girl? Wink

Ivorie - parents can't spell

Either way not a name.

Ivory appears in negative news stories about the "Ivory ban" or the "bloody Ivory trade" etc etc. At some point your DD would see her name in an unpleasant headline.

If you want something similar to ivory in sound, how about Avery, Evelyn, ivy, Ava...

I would always think Ebony & Ivory
Similar to Mahogany, more of a material than a name.

It's just so unusual that it throws people I guess. If you like it use it. I was thrown when I met an Ebony, but after the first few seconds, never really thought about it again except to think how much it suited her.

White supremacist?! Lol, wouldn't occur to me! And it's a far cry from calling her chlymadia!

i personally find it doesn't roll off the tongue.

avery does, but i don't like that as much.

rowan is lovely although i thought that was a boy's name?

Just don't. Avery is much nicer.

I like Rowan. I always think of it as a girls' name rather than boys'. Personally, I prefer it for a girl.

I came across Ivory as the main character in a book and expected to love it, but actually it has a really clunky sound.

Ivy Rowan sounds much nicer.

They could, and most people with manners wouldn't pass comment. But that reasoning could be used for someone who likes the sound of Chlamydia or Myra and wants to name a daughter. Words/names aren't just sounds if they also mean things to people.
