There is also Ainsley which has a similar vibe to Avery?

Clementine is beautiful (biased I have one). Don't use it though don't want it getting popular! Prefer pronunciation to rhyme with "wine" not "teen".

Avery automatically makes me think of Ovary which is a shame as it's a pretty name.

I'm not sure how people are associating Avery with America and not Clementine. You have all heard the song "oh my darling Clementine" which is an American traditional song about the California gold rush right? Usually sung in a faux strong American twang?

That being said I really really like both of them. Plus with Clementine you get a lullabye built in

Avery is great. It's definitely a name for a girl - an old variant of Aphra / Affery, I think?

Definitely Clementine, the only Avery I know is a boy Wink and American (which is great if you're American!)

A Clementine WILL be Clem. I know 3 and they have all ended up Clem or Clemmie as has the Clement I know.

That and Clammy Clemmie and Phlegmy Clemmie.

Ok that makes sense then. You are right you can't really control nns, so if I were you I'd go with Avery ( and because it's so great). The Avery's I know (am in Canada) are all just that. No nick names ok well apart from Aves maybe.

sorry i didnt say im not intentionally going to shorten either its just there always becomes a shortened nick name doesnt there like jennifer to jen etc...
avery would naterally shorten to ava but clementine to clem which im not keen on but ive heard of it shortened to em...not that i have much control over nick names really

I love Avery. It's true in the US it is a unisex name but becoming more popular for girls recently. I would use it for another DD if I have one. I too don't understand the need to shorten. Avery is so lovely you don't need to. If you like Ava then go for that. Clementine is ok. Agreed with others if you like Em, then Emma or a derivative seems the obvious option.

Why would you call a Clementine 'Emmie' that's just really confusing? Go for a name like Emmeline if you want to use Emmie.

It's like calling a child Penelope and announcing she's to be known as Nancy.

Although I think Em/Emmie is a bit of weird shortening - and kind of takes away from the lovely unusualness that is Clementine - makes it into Emma/Emily etc (nice names, but more common).
