Hey everyone I've got 10 weeks to go and me and the hubby finally settled on the name Amber but no one in my family really seems to like it very much!

What are your views? Or any alternatives you think I may like! I'm trying for something not too popular. Thanks :)

This is baby names, you have no need to worry about anyone being polite!

I thinks it's a perfectly good name, recognisable, easy to spell without being one of the hundreds of ava/Emily/Amelia hybrids so popular atm.
It's pretty, has links to nature without being massively hippy and is pretty undefined as a particular class.

Families tend to put a real microscope on names which they feel entitled to have an opinion on, I'm sure if they met an Amber non related to them they would probably think it was quite nice.

You could try reminding them it was/will be their turn to have an opinion when they have/had their children. It's you and your partners opinion that really counts now.

Lovely name, was on my list.

PunkAssMoFo · 24/02/2014 15:47

Like.

Pretty, but not twee.

RonaldMcDonald · 24/02/2014 13:53

never

badtime · 24/02/2014 13:50

I don't know anyone called Amber. I like it.

It is a bit 80s/90s retro, but that is not a bad thing.

LoveVintage · 24/02/2014 13:26

My niece is Amber. Love it. She is 4 and quite feisty. We call her Ambo.

ZenNudist · 24/02/2014 13:25

I know of 2 young ambers (dds of friends of friend) so no personal connection. Think its a very nice name. Think your family rude to show dislike of name you've chosen. Shouldn't have told them!

Stick with your choice. You could use a more 'classic' / common middle name to keep her options open, like Amber Catherine or Amber Sophia

Onesleeptillwembley · 24/02/2014 13:23

Seems like a pets name, not a person.

27mummmy2boys · 24/02/2014 13:21

Thanks I'm glad so many people like it! :) My boys both have quite popular names which has become more noticeable now they're starting school so I wanted something abit different. I hope the people who dislike it arnt too polite to comment xx

I am not related to any Ambers. I still think it is a beautiful name.

CoffeeChocolateWine · 24/02/2014 13:18

I love the name Amber and for my DD it was my top name, but DH vetoed.

In fact a friend of mine was pregnant at the same time and before she found out she was having a boy, she told me that Amber had been her top girls name too but her DH had also vetoed. But here's the slightly weird thing...my DH said no because he thought it was "a bit chavvy"; my friend's DH said no because he thought it was "too posh" Confused

I still think it's a gorgeous name.

squoosh · 24/02/2014 13:17

'I guess you will be more likely to get people bothering to come on and say yes because they have a personal connection to the name. For me - I think your family probably represent general opinion'

Nope I don't know any Ambers, just think it's a nice name. It would appear that you're wrong and the general opinion is that it's a perfectly fine name.

17leftfeet · 24/02/2014 13:15

I know 3 -28,12&8

It's nice, not too popular but not a crazy name either

Tell your family if they don't like it then your number 2 choice is Gladys Grin

ginzillas · 24/02/2014 13:12

I love it but a friend's sister recently named her Dd it and none of the family liked it. I couldn't understand it as I think it's gorgeous.

BrunoBrookesDinedAlone · 24/02/2014 13:10

Eeek, all these likes... I guess you will be more likely to get people bothering to come on and say yes because they have a personal connection to the name. For me - I think your family probably represent general opinion - there's nothing awful about it, but it's just not a particularly appealing name. I'm not sure why!

Apologies to relatives of all the lovely Ambers on this thread!!

fideline · 24/02/2014 13:08

Lovely

squoosh · 24/02/2014 13:06

I like it too.

DwellsUndertheSink · 24/02/2014 13:01

we have an Amber. WIth strawberry blonde hair. She is 17 and gorgeous.

bigkidsdidit · 24/02/2014 13:00

I've always liked Amber! It's lovely.

Gileswithachainsaw · 24/02/2014 12:59

I love it. Was sadly vetoed by dp for either dd :(

CatchesTheNightTrain · 24/02/2014 12:59

I've got an Amber, she is 8 :-)

I obviously love the name, it's not crazy or wacky but we don't know any other Amber's either which we like.

LittleMilla · 24/02/2014 12:58

Like it. Makes me think of a pretty girl with auburn hair!

MavisDee · 24/02/2014 12:57

I like it

BirthdayMuppet · 24/02/2014 12:54

It's perfectly pleasant, doesn't really grab me. But if you and your dh like like it you should go for it. It's the one thing I've come to realise after many moons on these boards, that bar the really obviously weird ones, names are very personal, and we can all have opinions on them, but the only ones that matter are those of the parents.

Misfitless · 24/02/2014 12:32

I agree. It's quite unusual round our way. I only know one and she's at high school.
