it's Ariane... I didn't think it was so offensive but everyone hates it, especially shortened to Ari. I know I shouldn't care but can't help it!! :-(

I love Ariane. I honestly would say if I didn't. Who did you ask other than your grandma (you do have to discount gps' opinions bless them)

Wish I had chose Ariane (or similar) rather than a dull top 50 name. It has the virtue of being a bit different without being 'out there'

pancakesfortea · 23/02/2014 20:27

I had a friend called Ariane at university. She was beautiful, warm, funny and very very clever. She's the only Ariane I've ever known so the name reminds me of her.

BCBG · 23/02/2014 20:26

DD's BEST friend at school is Ari (short for Arabella) and everyone calls her it - it sounds lovely and I have never, ever known of any critical comments x

TheGonnagle · 23/02/2014 20:24

Dh and I are unanimous- that's a lovely name. Ignore them- she's your daughter and it's none of their business.

miffybun73 · 23/02/2014 20:23

Never heard it before, but I think that it's lovely.

Really pretty and delicate sounding :)

Wishyouwould · 23/02/2014 20:17

Ah thanks Abi Celeb in the loosest sense of the word then. Had thought it was a glam young Hollywood actress....

AbiRoad · 23/02/2014 20:12

The celeb is Imogen Thomas the welsh one from big brother who had the affair with Ryan giggs. Think her dd is Ariana though. Woud not put me off the name.

ZingSweetMango · 23/02/2014 20:10

It's nice, go for it.Smile

reminds me of Ariadne, also fine

I have a name I want for our baby if a girl - but not telling anyone.
I can't think of anything else I like or able to use for a girl so I don't want people ruining it for me.
DH is not so keen, my favourite SIL loves it (also godmother to be) - so that's enough for now!Wink

extracrunchy · 23/02/2014 20:09

I think it's lovely!

Avacathar · 23/02/2014 20:08

I think its a beautiful name, I love the older names like Evelyn, Adriana, Evie. My daughter was Emmeline (my great great Gran- only person who liked it was my Gran) all the way through pregnancy....when I had her however, She was an Ava, so now I have an Ava Catherine Harriet :) No matter what you call your daughter someone will always have an opinion- even if they have no right to! As long as you love the name that's all that matters. If your really worried about it, put it as her middle name and call her it... I'm forever calling Ava, Catherine or AvaCate xx

Incapinka · 23/02/2014 20:07

Lovely name and I know a very pretty and very lovely Ariane. Advice is to keep quiet on names you love until baby born then they can't be negative and taint it

MrsRV · 23/02/2014 19:54

lesson learnt. won't be telling anyone else & perhaps won't mention it again... people have 11 weeks to forget!!!

It's a lovely name, one of the dutch princesses (currently age 5) is called Ariane, so she'll be in good company ;-). People say daft things sometimes, I think it's better not to mention any names beforehand, and once baby is born, everyone will just think she (and her name) will be beautiful! X

Wishyouwould · 23/02/2014 19:47

Can't remember who but a sleb couple have recently called their baby Ariane (or could have been Ariana, very similar anyway) I'd not heard it before and thought it was lovely.

Davidhasselhoffstoecheese · 23/02/2014 19:47

Big mistake! Every one will give you an opinion if you tell them a name ore birth. Announce the name post birth and then it's not up for discussion.

Ariane is stunning!!! It will grow on the others

TweenageAngst · 23/02/2014 19:46

I know an Ariane, she shortens it to annie. I think it is lovely.

I would say Ariane was too lovely to shorten to Ari, unless she herself decides to shorten it. Nothing wrong with it. Is she here already?

MrsRV · 23/02/2014 19:42

thanks all, I think it means holy one, my grandma says its a really old name. I've only ever heard of one & she was beautiful.

Harry with the H dropped is a popular comment.

only 29 weeks so still a while to go but this is the only name that hubs & I have actually thought could be the one. and DD sounds adorable saying it!!

Is it you who posted before about calling a child Ariane after the ship your father served on? It's not a bad name, just unfamiliar to many. I love names with a reason connected to personal history (if it was you with the ship thread).

killpeppa · 23/02/2014 19:39

ariane! its such a gorgeous name:) ignore the comments!

when I told people the name of my Ds1 late in pregnancy a friend of mine told me it was 'very catholic' & that I should pick a different one- thats belfast for you folksEnvy

MirandaGoshawk · 23/02/2014 19:39

It's a lovely name. I don't know why people would hate it, unless they hate classic, pretty names in general - the kind of people who would call their DD names like Bailey and whatever monstrosities Stella McCartney has inflicted on her dch.

Sometimes people say things to dent your happiness. I remember someone coming to our new house, shaking her head & saying "Such a shame that they put that radiator there, and not over there." Who are these people anyway? Not real friends.

cuggles · 23/02/2014 19:39

andadietcoke...I nearly wrote 'delicate' too...exactly right!

cuggles · 23/02/2014 19:38

Mind you, going back to the Ari bit....I was totally set on not shortening my dd name as it sounded awful (I thought)..I call her by it all the time now and love it! Anyone who knows her, I think Ari is great, quite cool, my comment is only for those that don't initally know her full name!
