everyone hates our name!!! :-(

it's Ariane... I didn't think it was so offensive but everyone hates it, especially shortened to Ari. I know I shouldn't care but can't help it!! :-(

I like it. Have a friend called Arianne and only ever seen it spelled like that before.

I think it depends on how you say the Ari. I know 2 boys and one girl called Ari (not short for anything). The girl is Ari pn Arry, like harry without the 'h'. Both the boys are Ari pn Ah-ri.

I love it! And I'm really, really fussy and judgy. It's beautiful, classic, easy to spell and pronounce, and has lots of options for shortenings. I'm adding it to my wishlist of future daughter names :)

If I chose baby names dependent on what others think then dd and this coming baby would have names I dont like.

As it is, the judgers can concern themselves with naming their own dcs and I will mine. Tough titty if they dont like the names - they arent their names to judge.

As a poster said recently on another thread, Ariane is the French form of the classical Greek name Ariadne (A-ree-ad-ni). For powerful myths in which Ariadne features see:

I like knowing people's opinions of my DC names, positive and negative. I am not keen on Ariane, it's not my kind of name but would probably grow on me if I knew one.

Do people really tell you they don't like the name? Shock.

I am a bit surprised by some of the names family/friends call their children but I would never comment on it. I can't believe people are so rude.

But seriously, it is a lesson to never, ever tell anyone your choice of name before the baby arrives.

Best not to tell anyone.

Before your baby is born people are not afraid to tell you their thoughts on a name,.

Once baby is born people are usually too polite to say if they don't like it.

Don't canvas opinions- no matter what name you choose someone will dislike it.
Keep it private and make the announcement once your baby is herer.

I just honestly don't understand the dislike. hubby is a little more persuaded by others opinions in respect of names than me, but even he is standing his ground on this one, thankfully!!!!

It is a very pretty name. But this is exactly why I decided to keep my DS's name a secret until he was born. I swear people can ruin any name by telling you their dog is called that or the horrible bully from school had the same name. My sister didn't tell us her DCs names before birth & now I don't even ask people who are pregnant.

I decided to do the same when I was discussing names with my best friend and she said the name I liked sounded like a stripper. Shock

Anyway, it's a beautiful name. If you like it stick with it.

I like it. Surprised it's had such a bad reception. Sometimes names genuinely need that kind of reception because they're awful/misguided but I wouldn't say Ariane was amongst those names.

It seems a bit unfinished to me, but that's just because I keep thinking Arianwen (it's a Welsh name, I'm Welsh see).

I'm stunned. It's a pretty name and totally inoffensive, please ignore negative comments. I had a few when I told people my chosen names but managed to ignore. Glad I did.

It's your baby but as everyone else is saying, it is a LOVELY name.

The Ariane I know is a curly-haired, beautiful Greek-American yoga teacher.

I really wish I hadn't let other people and their screwed up faces and negative opinions put me off the name we loved.

I don't care that others prefer the name we used. I was in love with the one we didn't.

Another one here who loves it. Very rude of people to say they don't like it when it's clear you do.

Tell them the baby is to be called 'Windchime' and watch them discover their sudden love of Ariane.
