Thoughts on Regan?

Pronounced Rae-gan. It's Irish apparently. I like it but I'm scared it'll sound American or chavvy (or both).
I want a strong name if I have a girl, nothing girly. Suggestions welcome!

It's certainly strong - but the Regan in King Lear is so evil, I just couldn't. I know what you mean about girl names and wanting a strong one, but I wouldn't go there!

I like it in theory but it has too many bad associations -- The Exorcist and King Lear between them are bad enough, but there's the soundalike President and also John Thaw in The Sweeney (which isn't a bad association under the right circumstances, but is when it comes to girls' names).

I think many people would end up saying "Reegun" not "Raegan" and sorry but it makes me think of the Sweeney and a surname rather than a first name but I don't like the surname as first name thing eg Mackenna, Mackenzie that the Americans sometimes go for nor do I like the name Ireland (Kim Basinger's daughter) or London (one of the Real Housewives' daughters) that seem fashionable nowadays but names are terribly subjective and personal so can understand why some appeal to others.

The exorcist link would not bother me in the slightest. These days there's not a single name you couldn't link to a film or tv program or some guy/girl/alien/hamster somewhere.

I always think of king Lear when I hear the name. I know 2 one is a 17yr old boy the other is a 12 yr old girl.

It's Reegan though the pronunciation ?

I'm aware of the Shakespearean pokey eyed link but to me Regan/Reagan is a surname and reminds me of that terrible American President.
