I know it's a bit old-fashioned, but I really like the name Ian. Short, nice sounding, simple. Is it too old-man though?

I like it a lot and the 3 Ians I know are lovely people (not weasel like at all) for me its the perfect type of name unusual but not weird traditional but not overused..##good choice imo

treaclesoda · 15/02/2014 10:58

oh, actually, you know the Olivia children's books, about the family of pigs? Olivia's little brother is called Ian, I remember thinking it was really cute when I read them, as it's an unusual name these days. I know comparing a child's name to a family of pigs sounds like I'm being a total bitch, but I'm not honestly, they're lovely books.

OP if you like it, use it!

treaclesoda · 15/02/2014 10:54

I know quite a few Ians, and ultimately its a perfectly ok name. But sadly for me it will be forever tainted by Rev Dr Ian Paisley Sad

Misspilly88 · 15/02/2014 10:42

I actually met a toddler called Ian yesterday! I have to say I was a bit shocked, cos he was so cute and didn't look like Ian Beale at all! If you want a truly original name though, you have to go with our parents generation....how about Trevor?! Hehe

MistletoeBUTNOwine · 11/02/2014 11:56

My dearly departed dad was called Ian, a jolly good bloke.
But I didn't like the name enough to give it to DS....

squoosh · 11/02/2014 11:53

Iain YES. Lovely.

Ian NO.

Two completely different 'feels' with the different spellings.

joyciegirl · 09/02/2014 19:03

The one I know is a fantastic lover! Wink

FleecyFeet · 09/02/2014 18:58

Will he be born a 40 year old IT consultant?

The one Ian I know is a 40 year old IT consultant Grin

I don't like it I think of a middle aged man dressed in dull clothes. And Ian Beale. Sorry Smile

DownstairsMixUp · 09/02/2014 16:08

*Will he be born a 40 year old IT consultant?

No, then.*

Literally lol'd out loud at that!

Agree though, to me it's linked in with names like Keith and Bob for some reason.

NotAnotherPackedLunchBox · 09/02/2014 16:06

My first thought was Ian Paisley Sad

Panzee · 09/02/2014 16:02

Another one who thought of Peep Show! Actually it's not the worst in the world, prefer Iain though.

WibbleBoy · 09/02/2014 15:55

I agree that Iain sounds like a 40-something-year-old IT professional. Then again, I have to since it's my name, and I am.

Nothing wrong it, though I'm happy that I was graced with two 'i's. There was a one time someone couldn't spell it at all and ended up with 'ean'

ouryve · 09/02/2014 15:32

There's an i missing ;)

Lottiedoubtie · 09/02/2014 15:29

I know an Ian ( approx 28) and an Iain, (approx 35) both lovely, kind, thoughtful men you'd be proud to be the parent of.

But I'd struggle to look at a baby and call him Ian (sorry!)

NaturalBaby · 09/02/2014 15:25

I don't really like it but ds's best friend is called Ian and he's a lovely boy.

lumpolead · 09/02/2014 15:22

why would you give a three letter name a nickname? Confused saying that i do like yan

lumpolead · 09/02/2014 15:21

i agree with pp about euan / evan Smile

kimlo · 09/02/2014 11:27

I like it

RabbitPies · 09/02/2014 11:26

I love it. It works well at any age IMHO.

Merrylegs · 09/02/2014 09:06

Ianto?

(pron. Yanto)

Theonlyoneiknow · 09/02/2014 09:05

If you both like it use it!!!! Don't be put off by a handful of comments from strangers who don't like it, there will be negative comments about every name!
