Is 'maddie' usable?

My friends are having a girl and like Madeleine, nn Maddie, and asked our opinion.

I love it, but they're worried about its usability because of mm. I said I could start a thread about it..

Their surname starts with Mc too Confused mcF-

There is a Madeleine in my dd's class (she's 4) also known as 'Maddie'. Tbh I don't think of MM when I come across another Madeleine, awful though that case was.

I don't see the problem with Maddie. Madeleine/Maddie is a beautiful name, which I love. With a Mc name? No, I would say a bit too far.

There was a child killed with the same name as the one we had chosen for our expected daughter and I asked DH if we should change it now. He said no and it has never been an issue. Maybe as there were two children taken and killed together it would have been more of an issue if I had been expecting girl twins and had chosen both those names. I suspect I would have insisted on changing one but who can tell.

They should do what they want but prepared for stupid, ignorant comments.

Yes, but that means that the association is Maddie and Madeleine.

I would use it. I'm sure there are still going to be girls named Tia, April, Sarah amongst others. It's tragic but life goes on. I too always think of the french cartoon character when I hear the name.

Our best friends have a 4.5year old called Maddie, not short for anything, & I don't think it's ever been a problem Smile

I'm a Maddie :) I'd just started secondary school when MM went missing - a couple of lads made comments about 'I've found Maddie', but most people took a really dim view of that and they stopped very quickly. I think anyone who commented would be told straight away that their comments are in bad taste. If the surname isn't "McCann" - even if it is a "Mc" - I don't think the MM reference would even register with me. Then again that may be because I'd be thrilled to see another Maddie Grin

If we stopped using the name of every child who went missing, we'd have a very limited choice.

I don't see the issue. It only seems to be Maddie people say this for not James for example.

But Rose was an adult when she became infamous. Ditto Fred.

Little Freds and Little Roses don't make people think of Rose and Fred west. Wouldn't use them for siblings though!

I would still use it. But then my DD also has a name which some on MN said they wouldn't use because of a high profile case. It's silly- people still use Holly and Jessica despite the awful Soham case, Ben despite the Ben Needham case, they still use Millie despite the Millie Dowler case. Whatever the name, I am sure if you looked hard enough you could find something to put you off.

Is April out of bounds for the same reason? I like the name April and wouldn't have avoided it for that reason, although maybe it's different because MM has been in the news for a longer period?

Yes I agree. If I knew a child called Madeleine I wouldn't associate her with any kind of negativity. It's just when I think of the name
Madeleine I think of that because I don't know any others. But if I did I wouldn't. Hope that makes some kind of sense!

It's a lovely name, I wouldn't not use it due to the one negative association.

Besides, it won't take any time at all for people's Madeleine association to be your DD rather than anything else.

MM isn't going to be news forever.

If you love the name use it.

Whenever I hear the name the first thing I think of is the book/cartoon Madeline.
