I really love this name & would without doubt pick it for my dc BUT im petrified about the raised eyebrows that may occur when we announce the name as when I've mentioned it in passing in the past a few people have thought it was bizarre... Please tell me what would YOU think if a member of your family announced the name Cooper for their new baby?

I'm not keen. I think of the annoying doctor "Coop" off Nurse Jackie.
And I think "Cooper Pooper" will be shouted across the playground at some point in this child's life. sorry.

I'd think they'd been watching American TV. I'm not a huge fan of surnames as first names but it's fine, hardly eyebrow raising.

I don't like it personally, or surnames as first names in general. But I don't think it is weird. It isn't very common here but I think it is one of the most popular names in Australia currently (have some relatives there with a baby Cooper, and I think there is another in their extended family.) So it will probably get more known here as well.

I like it. I think one of the advantages of surnames as first is that they're quirky without being 'out there' because we've all heard them before but in a different context.

I know a little girl called Mackenzie and it really works.

But I do think he'd need a monosyllabic surname.

Id wonder if it was a boy or girl. I usually wonder if a surname used as a first name is a 'family' name.

Or as Niles in Frazier says "Where are you getting these (names), the Big Book of Medieval Professions?"
